Compensation:

This is a full-time position with a 40-hour work week. The hourly wage ranges from $19.00 to $22.00, depending on experience. Employees receive holiday pay, sick leave, vacation time, insurance, and retirement benefits.

Job Summary:

The Animal Medical Care Technician will assist in providing veterinary medical services to animals at the Durham County Animal Shelter. Responsibilities include animal restraint and handling, basic animal care, assisting with medical and surgical procedures, administering medication, maintaining records, conducting laboratory tests, and performing equipment maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Restrain animals for medical examinations and procedures
  • Care for animals in medical areas (feeding, cleaning, monitoring, etc.)
  • Provide care for small animal species (rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, reptiles, birds, exotics, etc.), including initial setup, cage cleaning, feeding, and maintaining medical records
  • Transport animals between kennels and medical areas
  • Clean, stock, and prepare the surgery room and equipment
  • Clean, wrap, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and packs
  • Induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia
  • Recover anesthetized patients
  • Maintain medical records and drug logs
  • Monitor inventory levels, order, and restock supplies
  • Collect blood, urine, fecal, and other samples
  • Perform, interpret, and record results of basic laboratory tests (e.g., fecal flotation, SNAP tests, fungal cultures, urinalysis, ear cytology)
  • Administer vaccines
  • Administer oral and injectable medications
  • Implant microchips
  • Perform euthanasia (training and certification will be provided)
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Exceptional and compassionate animal care skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Experience in animal restraint and handling
  • Knowledge of common medical and behavioral issues in animals
  • Familiarity with basic shelter standards of care
  • Strong attention to detail and cleanliness
  • Ability to learn new skills effectively
  • Capability to work and thrive in an open-intake shelter setting
Education and Experience:
  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician is highly desired
