This position provides care and coordination for patients with the Internal Medicine department of the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. The Internal Medicine service offers leading edge care for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment for various health problems. A person in this department must possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medicine and a strong desire to work in a fast-changing, teaching environment with a varied population of people. Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to: Participate in client check in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and questions.
In depth knowledge of service specific patients through student and clinician communications regarding presenting problems, diagnostics, treatment options and overall projected plan of care.
Perform and support various diagnostic testing and procedures including; anesthesia support and monitoring, endoscopy preparation and support, routine diagnostic blood tests
Prepare patients for procedures through standard aseptic techniques, including; clip, prep, scrub and draping
Maintain a clean/sterile environment and provide assistance during routine and surgical procedures
Provide direct patient care and medical treatments including TPR, BP monitoring, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, sedative/treatment therapy injections, bandaging, NE tube placement/maintenance
Perform moderate risk drug calculations, including CRI, IV fluid, medical pain management, and antibiotic administration
Provide post-anesthesia and post-sedation recovery and care, including pain management, for an array of elective procedures such as endoscopy, NG/NE tube placement
Direct monitoring of patients for various disease process related diagnostics, such as, but not limited to; diabetes, infectious disease, endocrine disease, along with hematological, gastrointestinal, live, renal and respiratory disorders
Proficient use of specialized patient care equipment such as IV fluid pumps, pulse Oximeter, BP monitor, syringe pump
Work in tandem with diagnostic groups associated with CT, MRI, ultrasound, and radiography
The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:
Work directly with clients, rDVM, and hospital personnel to facilitate communication and anticipate, integrate and coordinate services that optimize both internal and external satisfaction and overall patient care.
Record and communicate a variety of data relating to patient care, client/rDVM communication and diagnostic testing/treatments with use of hospital information systems.
Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
Maintain a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
Participate in financial responsibilities such as procedural/consult charges, billing communications, estimate updates
Responsible for coordination of patient visit including but not limited to; requesting radiographic/surgical/anesthetic procedures, medication requests and diagnostic sample submission
Keep all necessary equipment in clean and working order and have all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient care

Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Required Qualifications:
Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
Ability to provide high quality customer service.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
Required license or certification:
Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
