Position Summary:

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium, located on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York has an opening for a full-time Veterinary Technician. The Veterinary Technician will serve as a vital member of the Aquatic Health Department, caring for diverse taxa including pinnipeds, sea otters, penguins, aquatic reptiles, teleost and elasmobranch fish, and aquatic invertebrates. The Veterinary Technician will assist veterinarians and other Aquatic Health team members in providing excellent care and treatment of animals in the WCS collection, in training professionals, students, and volunteers, and in supporting the mission of WCS. The Aquatic Health Department includes two veterinarians, two veterinary technicians, a hospital manager, a program assistant, a water quality laboratory manager, and three water quality analysts. Volunteers, veterinary residents, veterinary student externs, and veterinary technician student externs are also frequently onsite. Under the direction and supervision of the Hospital Manager, Senior Veterinary Technician, and veterinarians, the veterinary technician will maintain and operate the Aquatic Animal Health Center and associated clinical laboratory and animal care facilities. The veterinary technician will perform all expected functions of a zoo/aquarium vet tech, including setting-up, assisting with, and cleaning up after anesthetic and surgical procedures, in-hospital or on-grounds treatments, performance of diagnostic imaging (radiographs, ultrasonography), and collection, processing, and shipping diagnostic samples (blood, skin scrapes/gill clips, cytologies, fecals, etc.), and filling prescriptions. Other responsibilities include coordinating the preventative health care program, performing gross necropsies on fish and invertebrates, assisting water quality staff with sample collection or assessments, performing system-wide (water-based) medical treatments, maintaining hospital inventory, maintaining controlled drug log, training volunteers and externs, and maintaining accurate and timely medical records. Opportunities may exist to assist at the other WCS zoological parks and to participate in local conservation and fieldwork. Participation within professional organizations such as AZVT is encouraged. Qualification Requirements This position requires a veterinary technician degree (Associate or Bachelor), a New York State Veterinary Technician license (or eligibility to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire), and a driver’s license valid within NY. The Veterinary Technician must also understand and be able to comply with DEA regulations pertaining to controlled substances in veterinary practice. A minimum of 3 years of experience working full-time as a veterinary technician is preferred, preferably in a zoo or aquarium. Additional skills include the ability to work in a complex healthcare environment with diverse taxa and multiple veterinary staff, the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team that interacts closely with other departments, including Animal, Life-Support, and Facilities teams, and the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
