Job Description

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN PARTIME & FULLTIME

Washington Area Humane Society 1526 Route 136, Eighty Four, PA 15330 The staff at the Washington Area Humane Society give a voice to the voiceless animals by fulfilling their mission to provide shelter, safety, and care for the abandoned and abused animals of Washington County with the goal of placing them in forever homes. The veterinary technician at the WAHS is responsible for always providing high-quality veterinary care for shelter animals and community pets.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Assist in animal vet exams as directed by the staff veterinarian and document accurately in pet software
  • Assist in spay and neuter surgeries and other procedures as needed by the shelter veterinarian
  • Assist in low-cost vaccination clinics and low-cost spay/neuter clinics
  • Clean, stock, and disinfect the medical and animal spaces
ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Report any sick animals or medical issues to the Medical Manager and Veterinarian Compassionately, calmly, and gently approach and handle patients

  • Maintain daily logs of medications dispensed to which animal along with the amount
  • Assist in entering treatments into animals’ online animal profiles in animal management software Handle animals according to safety protocols and core values
  • Assist in scheduling day-to-day intake and medical needs of the animals in the shelter
  • Administer microchips, vaccinations, nail trims, medications and any other services needed
  • Follow all disinfecting protocols that apply to WAHS animals and containment areas
  • Assist in vaccination clinic days and be a positive, informative face on behalf of the vet tea
  • Have working knowledge of medications and treatments of the most common cat and dog illnesses
  • Be on call one week a month for foster phone after hours
  • Assist in surgery days, setup, intake, surgery, post-op care, discharge, cleaning
  • Clean, wrap, and sterilize instruments as dictated by the Medical Manager
  • Review emails and phone calls to the vet department and address promptly
REQUIREMENTS
  • 18 years or older
  • Minimum high school diploma or G.E.D., Veterinary Technician/Assistant Degree Preferred
  • If not licensed/certified as a veterinary technician, candidates should possess a minimum of two years prior work experience or equivalent in animal care and welfare. Shelter experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of animal welfare and medical care
  • Valid PA driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to work independently as well as take direction
  • Comfortable handling, treating, and restraining dogs and cats of varying size, age, breed, and temperament; other species may be required on infrequent basis
  • Ability to diplomatically interact with diverse people.
  • Dependable and timely is a key requirement of the job.
  • Willingness to attend educational and training programs as deemed necessary.
