Business Unit Manager Position Summary The Commercial Manager plays a critical role in leading internal sales operations, driving commercial growth, and ensuring top-tier customer satisfaction. This role leads the Inside Sales and Account Management teams while managing key customer accounts, driving process improvements, and collaborating across departments to support the company’s sales goals and market strategies. The ideal candidate is a results-driven leader with deep steel industry knowledge and a passion for service excellence. Key Responsibilities Customer Engagement & Relationship Management Develop and maintain professional relationships with customers in person, over the phone, and electronically. Provide customers with unmatched customer service experience. Efficiently call on customers and promptly respond to inquiries. Understand customer project requirements and offer tailored material or service solutions. Continually grow and share product knowledge with customers, staying informed about new products and industry trends. Team Leadership & Support Lead, mentor, and manage ISRs and Account Managers to achieve departmental goals. Handle escalated customer concerns and support issue resolution. Coordinate coverage and workload distribution during team absences or surges. Provide account managers with strategies to improve customer service, sell floor material, and enhance their personal organization. Sales Management & Strategy Manage and grow assigned customer accounts with a focus on service and profitability. Create and implement competitive pricing strategies based on market conditions. Review daily tons shipped and adjust pricing accordingly. Equip Account Managers with techniques to move excess or unsold inventory. Performance Monitoring & Reporting Monitor key sales metrics and profitability using Power BI and ERP systems. Provide monthly performance updates and concise sales reports to the Business Unit Manager. Conduct daily reviews of KPI reports (including cost of goods) to identify misalignments and implement corrective actions. Cross-functional Collaboration Work closely with Purchasing, Production, Shipping, and Quality to ensure cohesive operations. Collaborate with executive leadership, including the VP and Southern Sales Manager, on regional strategy and communication. Process Improvement & ERP Implementation Serve as the lead liaison between the sales team and the ERP implementation project. Continuously evaluate and improve internal sales processes and operational efficiency. Core Competencies & Skills Proven leadership and organizational skills with the ability to guide and motivate teams. Strong communication abilities—verbal, written, and presentation. Confidence in using ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Basic understanding of metallurgical and structural steel terminology. Knowledge of machine capabilities and ASTM specifications for steel grades. Excellent customer service skills with a consultative approach. Deep understanding of steel and commodity-based market dynamics. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered. Proven experience in steel service center sales; prior management experience is strongly preferred. Minimum of 3 years of direct sales experience within the structural steel industry, demonstrating strong industry knowledge and customer relationship skills.
