Job Description

Legislative District Field Director NJ Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee Edison, NJ Purpose:

A top-tier joint Assembly campaign in New Jersey seeks a full-time Legislative District Field Director to lead efforts to elect two Democratic candidates to the NJ General Assembly in an assigned legislative district. This critical role will be responsible for building and leading a dynamic field team to execute robust voter contact programs, volunteer recruitment, and community outreach efforts. The Field Director will manage multiple field organizers and volunteer staff and play a crucial role in political relationship management, event planning, and execution. The role runs from December 15, 2024, to November 30, 2025, with potential changes in district assignment after the June primary election.

Primary Responsibilities:
Develop and Execute Field Strategy :

Work with the Campaign Manager to create and oversee a comprehensive field plan for both candidates, including voter contact, GOTV (Get Out the Vote), grassroots organizing, and political outreach.

Team Leadership :

Recruit, hire, and manage field organizers specializing in digital organizing and traditional field volunteer activities. Provide daily oversight, coaching, and training to ensure they meet voter contact and volunteer recruitment goals.

Volunteer Management :

Develop volunteer leaders, manage volunteer recruitment, and ensure the team has sufficient volunteers to meet field goals. Organize and manage phone banks, canvass launches, and volunteer training sessions.

Event Planning :

Plan and execute campaign-related events such as town halls, community outreach, and fundraising events to help the candidates connect with voters.

Political Relationship Management :

Cultivate relationships with political organizations, community groups, and local leaders to build support for both candidates. Ensure communication and collaboration with allied groups.

Progress Reporting :

Provide regular updates on voter contact goals, field efforts, and data management to ensure the campaign stays on track.

Staff Management :

Create and manage staff schedules, ensuring staff maintain productivity in a demanding and tiring environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience :

At least 1-2 election cycles in field management, focusing on staff management and field organizing.

Leadership Skills :

Proven ability to manage teams, especially in high-stress, fast-paced environments.

Assertive Communication :

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to motivate staff and volunteers.

Event Management :

Experience planning and executing large-scale canvass events, volunteer outreach efforts, and community gatherings.

Political Relationship Building :

Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, political groups, and community organizations.

Technical Skills :

Familiarity with voter databases, volunteer management software, and essential digital tools for organizing (e.g., Mobilize, Impactiv, Scale to Win, Google Suite, etc.).

Commitment :

Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends, to meet the campaign’s goals.

Valid Driver’s License :

A reliable vehicle, smartphone, and computer are required.

Responsibilities:

The Field Director role requires a mix of office work and substantial time spent in the field. While some responsibilities involve working in a campaign office (e.g., planning, reporting, and managing data), most of the role requires fieldwork.

Key physical requirements include:
Mobility:

Ability to travel frequently between various locations within the district, including canvass sites, community events, and field offices.

Stamina:

Long hours, including evenings and weekends, in indoor and outdoor environments. This can involve walking for extended periods during canvassing, door-knocking, and overseeing field operations.

Event Support:

Assisting with setup and breakdown of canvass launches, volunteer stations, and outreach events.

Communication:

Strong verbal communication skills to engage voters, volunteers, and stakeholders. This position requires physical resilience and the ability to adapt to varying work conditions, whether supporting candidates during canvassing efforts or managing field organizers. How to
