Job Description

Heavy Equipment Junior Operations Trainee 2.5 2.5 out of 5 stars Clayton, NC General Summary The Junior Operations Trainee is a full-time, temporary position designed for highly motivated individuals seeking long-term career growth within NED. This 36-40 week training program provides hands-on experience across multiple departments, including Service, Parts, Rentals/Sales, Administration, and Management. Participants will gain a deep understanding of operational workflows, interdepartmental collaboration, and strategic business functions in preparation for future roles within the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Trainees will rotate through key areas of NED’s business model, completing structured tasks and guided learning experiences in each department: Service Assist with Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDIs), system diagnostics, hydraulic repairs, and general shop duties.

Support dispatch operations:

scheduling mechanics, handling customer service calls, using Nextrax, and opening Work Orders. Ride along with service and lube technicians to observe and participate in field and/or shop services and scheduled maintenance operations.

Perform service writing tasks:

entering Work Orders, submitting warranty claims, processing invoices, and obtaining approvals. Understand and apply warranty qualification procedures and technician reporting. Parts Answer phones and assist customers at the parts counter. Prepare parts invoices and perform lookups in internal systems. Work in the warehouse to receive, ship, and pull parts for service. Learn TrinDocs and inventory control procedures including cycle counts. Support service operations by pulling and attaching parts to Work Orders. Rentals/Sales Respond to equipment management calls, identify available units, coordinate transportation, and create invoices. SAFELY and proficiently learn to operate and walk through setup on our different categories and brands of equipment. Ride along with a lowboy driver. Shadow sales team during customer visits, cold calls, and follow-up on service concerns. Collaborate with senior staff (Jason/Marcus/Andy) to understand sales summaries, financial processes, and product training/testing. Administration Assist Accounts Receivable in collections tasks. Support Accounts Payable functions and documentation. Observe HR and Safety practices and reporting.

Management/Financials Participate in fleet oversight:

utilization tracking, management of loaners. Learn from General Management on topics such as profit & loss analysis, balance sheets, and overall departmental performance reviews.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Attend scheduled training meetings, team briefings, and performance reviews. Complete learning assessments and skills evaluations at the end of each departmental rotation. Provide feedback and improvement suggestions for training materials and departmental procedures. Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment. Maintain accurate logs or journals of daily activities for review by program supervisors.

Educational/Vocational/Previous Experience Recommendations:

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred. Previous work or internship experience in customer service, equipment service, parts, warehouse, or sales is a plus. Strong interest in mechanical systems, logistics, or equipment-related industries preferred. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. Comfortable working in office, shop, and warehouse environments with varying tasks.

Working Conditions:

Work will occur across multiple departments, both in office settings and shop/warehouse environments. May include physical tasks such as lifting parts, walking through service bays, and riding in equipment. Regular use of phones, computers, diagnostic tools, and warehouse systems. Exposure to noise, grease, and shop conditions in service areas. Standard workweek with occasional variation based on rotation schedules and supervisor direction. Must be comfortable interacting with team members, supervisors, and customers.
