Job Purpose:

As a Charge Scenic & Specialty Painter, you will be the visionary leader and master artisan responsible for the entire scenic paint shop. You will manage and mentor a talented team, oversee all departmental operations from purchasing and inventory to paint mixing and application. Your expertise in creating new paint recipes and applying specialized finishes, particularly with HVLP spraying, will be crucial in transforming raw materials into stunning, immersive props that meet Escapology’s highest quality and durability standards. This role is for a hands-on leader who thrives on creative problem-solving and delivering exceptional artistic results.

Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the Scenic Paint team: Provide guidance, training, and support to ensure high performance and adherence to production schedules.

Oversee paint shop operations:

Efficiently manage daily workflow, prioritize tasks, and optimize the use of space and equipment to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.

Manage departmental purchasing and inventory:

Take full responsibility for identifying, sourcing, and ordering all necessary paints, materials, supplies, and tools. Maintain accurate inventory records and optimize stock levels. Develop and create new paint recipes and finishes: Experiment with bases, colors, and additives to formulate unique paint recipes and innovative faux finishes (e.g., stone, marble, aged wood) that enhance the immersive quality of props.

Apply advanced painting techniques:

Expertly paint props in accordance with Escapology paint guidelines, utilizing various tools including brushes, rollers, sponges, and HVLP sprayers to achieve desired effects, textures, and quality standards.

Texturize and shape props:

Use handheld power tools and blended materials to create depth, realism, and specific aesthetic looks for props.

Transform raw materials:

Guide the process of taking materials from their raw state to a refined, polished, and finished product.

Ensure quality control:

Implement and maintain rigorous quality control standards for all painted elements, ensuring they meet or exceed established benchmarks.

Collaborate across departments:

Work closely with other manufacturing departments (e.g., Carpentry, Special Fabrication) and design teams to ensure seamless integration and successful project completion.

Problem-solve and innovate:

Proactively identify and resolve challenges, providing valuable recommendations for process improvements and creative solutions.

Maintain cleanliness and organization:

Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and organization within the paint shop, serving as a model for the team.

Adhere to safety protocols:

Strictly follow all Federal, State, and company safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE, especially when handling paints and operating equipment.

Preferred Experience & Abilities:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Charge Scenic who is ready to lead our paint shop to new levels of excellence. 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a scenic, theatrical, or themed entertainment paint shop. Extensive experience with HVLP spraying techniques is a must. Proven experience in paint chemistry and recipe creation, with the ability to develop and document new custom finishes. 5+ years of comprehensive experience in scenic painting, specialty finishes, and texturing for theatrical sets, escape room elements, or other immersive entertainment experiences. Strong background in purchasing, inventory management, and budget oversight for a paint department. Proficiency in transforming raw materials into refined, polished, and finished products. Experience using a wide range of paint application tools (brushes, rollers, sponges, sprayers) and power tools (sanders, dremels). Ability to effectively utilize computers, Windows OS, Google products, Airtable, and a willingness to learn new software. Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to meeting stringent quality control standards. Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills to efficiently balance workshop operations, team management, and administrative tasks. Physical strength to lift objects weighing between 35-50 lbs on occasion, as needed. Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing job-related duties, as needed.
