Summary:

The Department of Surgery (DOS) is seeking Division Managers to lead the development, implementation, and ongoing management of initiatives across the nine clinical divisions of the Department. Reporting to the Associate Chair, Division Managers will work directly with their respective Division Chiefs and faculty, providing operational, financial, strategic, and academic management to the Division. Division Managers will also coordinate with DOS Director of Clinical Operations, Director of Academic Affairs, Director of Research, Business Manager, and Educational staff to position their Division for success in alignment with DOS strategy. The Division Manager must demonstrate strong knowledge of clinical operations, financial management, strategic planning, and academic missions, and will leverage these skills to drive multiple, simultaneous Divisional initiatives, in alignment with UNC Health’s overall academic and clinical objectives

Responsibilities:
  • Lead communication and collaboration among clinicians, administrators, system stakeholders and UNC Health/School of Medicine leaders to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Support academic and clinical missions in the Division, in collaboration with the Departmental leaders in education and academic affairs. These missions encompass faculty development and research, in efforts for retention and promotion, as well as resident/fellow training.
  • Develop divisional budgets and coordinate clinician compensation plans. Actively participate in oversight of financial data reporting and analytics to ensure accuracy of information shared and to allow for ongoing monitoring and improvement of organizational performance.
  • Partner with Legal and Compliance to ensure system and entity policies are widely understood and upheld.
  • Collaborate with HR, departmental leadership, and division leadership to recruit, successfully onboard, and retain key clinicians and staff.
  • Collaborate with clinic leadership and act as primary point of contact between providers and clinic staff to optimize workflows, follow clinic metrics, and adjust schedules/templates.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and evaluate employees to develop highly performing teams, with particular emphasis on onboarding and mentoring administrative leaders.
  • Utilize KPIs, dashboards, and other data specific to experience, finance, HR, and quality to lead performance improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with fellow Division Managers to share and implement best practices across the Department of Surgery, ensuring alignment and consistency in operational and strategic initiatives.
  • Facilitate bi-directional communication between the divisions they oversee and department leadership, ensuring that divisions are informed of department-level decisions and have a clear pathway to escalate issues or barriers to leadership for resolution.
  • Participate in planning with faculty and other members of departmental leadership. Manage multiple initiatives across the department and in partnership with SOM and hospital leaders.
  • Advance Division initiatives by meeting regularly with partners in clinical, research and educational areas.
  • Collaborate with revenue cycle and Faculty Physician finance to identify opportunities and develop plans to remedy variances.
  • Drive growth by identifying opportunities to increase productivity, revenue, and cost savings.

  • Professional Experience Requirements:
  • Applicants with five or more years of applicable experience may be considered if actively pursuing a related Master’s Degree and completion is within three years.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to complex inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Ability to use hospital and medical claims processing software. Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Schedule Plus, and Microsoft Exchange. Proficient keyboarding skills.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
