Overview:
We are looking for a motivated General Manager to help open and lead the team at Ladybird Books. The right bookseller will bring a high standard of excellence to customer engagement, team management, retail book sales, marketing, and merchandising. The General Manager will also be responsible for making sure the store environment reflects Ladybird Books’ principles of organization and aesthetics to provide the customer with our unique point of view and book browsing experience. We require our managers to be self starters who thrive in a fast paced retail environment. We need an intrepid personnel leader, someone who leads by example, with compassion and positive energy. Bookselling is such an inspired profession and attracts a dynamic demographic. As General Manager, you will be charged with identifying and championing your staff’s individual strengths. You will need to be an excellent communicator.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Develops personal connections with customers and fulfills all of the basic needs of day-to-day customer service, including gift wrapping, cash wrap, answering phones. Manages a team of 9-15 booksellers and monitors payroll budget. Collaborates with the Assistant Managers to ensure a designation of duties between the two roles. Creates or oversees daily and weekly schedules according to the needs of management and assists with schedule concerns and staff callouts. Oversees register opening and closing, performs weekly bank deposits, till replenishment, and works with our finance team to investigate any cash/register inconsistencies. Organizes restocking, straightening displays, reorganizing back stock, stickering product, coding product department and category fields with booksellers. Ensures supply orders and coordinates supply requests from the central warehouse. Creating, training, and modeling standards of loss prevention and safety. Attends marketing meetings and bi-weekly management meetings and leadership training.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience preferred 5+ years of retail management experience required Bookselling experience required Confidence to work independently with minimal supervision; highly motivated, flexible and patient Creative problem-solver with great attention to detail Outstanding leadership and communication skills; active listener Strong analytical and thoughtful point of view Exemplifies professional and ethical behaviors Demonstrated merchandising skills; aesthetically inclined Flexible to work nights and weekends Computer and IT competency a plus Experience working with BookManager a plus Must love books About Ladybird Books Nestled in the heart of Charleston at 299 King Street, Ladybird Books is more than just a bookstore-it’s a gathering place for ideas, voices, and impact.
