Opened in 2016, Buxton Books is an independent, New York Times and ABA reporting bookstore located on King Street, the main thoroughfare in historic, downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Buxton Books is an events-motivated bookstore, with a track record of successful, book-included events. We specialize in dynamic, creative events ranging from bespoke walking tours to culinary events. With a knowledgeable staff, highly curated book selection, and robust event schedule, we value and uphold the traditions of a neighborhood bookstore while also welcoming the visiting reading community. Buxton Books specializes in creative collaborations throughout our community with venues, non-profits, and many other organizations.

Job Purpose:

The Floor Manager is the driving force behind the day-to-day operations of the bookstore. They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the store’s performance, from scheduling and inventory management to team development and customer experience. As a key leader, they set the tone for the floor, ensure smooth coordination with the events and tours teams, and keep operations running efficiently and intentionally. This role is equal parts people leadership and operational excellence—motivating the team, addressing performance, and fostering a culture rooted in Buxton’s values. The Floor Manager is ultimately accountable for making sure the store not only functions, but thrives. Primary Responsibilities Oversee all daily operations of the bookstore, ensuring smooth, efficient, and high-standard execution across all shifts Create and manage the staff schedule to meet business needs while supporting work-life balance and team consistency Lead, coach, and develop the bookstore team—including setting expectations, giving feedback, addressing performance, and cultivating a positive, accountable culture Manage store inventory, oversee receiving and replenishment processes, and ensure accurate product tracking in collaboration with book buying team Own visual merchandising strategy in collaboration with leadership, ensuring displays are fresh, relevant, and aligned with sales goals and store aesthetics Partner with the events and tours teams to ensure cross-functional coordination and seamless guest experiences Support in-store marketing efforts and promotions, offering input on strategy and execution to help drive traffic and sales Monitor sales performance and store metrics, identifying opportunities for growth and implementing strategies to improve results Serve as the primary point of contact for escalated customer issues, complex situations, and high-level decision-making during business hours Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and presentation throughout the store Model and uphold Buxton’s mission and values in all areas of leadership, helping to create a workplace rooted in hospitality, clarity, and proactive collaboration Who You Are 4+ years experience in a customer facing role with an emphasis on engaging and thoughtful interactions preferred 2+ years experience in a retail leadership role preferred You have open availability (nights, weekends, and holidays) You are a positive person with an optimistic attitude You are flexible and understand that company needs will change at any given time You are friendly, approachable, and love engaging with strangers You have excellent communication skills You care about the impact you have on other members of your team You love learning & take initiative to do so Be able to lift 50 lbs Be able to stand on your feet for prolonged periods of time
