We are looking for an experienced biochemist to participate inour exciting studies of the human protein kinome.
As part of thelargest BlueSky initiative, “Seeing the Invisible in ProteinKinases” at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we are expandingour structural studies of the human kinome to identify novelkinase-binding ligands. We are looking for an experiencedbiochemist to aid in these efforts.
The candidate will work in afast-paced research environment, studying protein kinases bygenerating and characterizing high quality proteins, assessingbinding affinity and kinetics using various biophysical techniquesin collaboration with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)spectroscopists and computational biologists. This role willinvolve working closely as part of a multidisciplinary teamincluding computational chemists, structural biologists,biochemists, and other biophysical specialists. The unparalleledNMR center at St. Jude includes three 600 MHz, two 700 MHz, six 800MHz, 850 MHz, and the first 1.1 GHz in theworld.
Responsibilities:
Perform tasks related to the research project independently,but within specific guidelines and subject to regular review bysupervisor or other research staff. Perform basic molecular biology techniques like polymerasechain reaction (PCR), vector construction, plasmid purification andsequencing analysis. Responsible for expression, purification, modification, andcharacterization of recombinant proteins from a variety of hostcells. Design and implement purification schemes and proteinanalytics, present results, and interpretation. Lead troubleshooting efforts for protein expression andpurification processes. Work effectively in a collaborative team environment whereresults are achieved through influence, cooperation, and theincorporation of multiple points of view.
Ideal Candidate:
Proven expertise in advanced molecular cloning techniques. Experience generating chimeric recombinant sequences,site-directed mutagenesis, random mutagenesis, codon optimization,and/or gene synthesis is highly desired. Strong background in protein biochemistry, protein purification(using affinity and traditional chromatographic techniques), andbiophysical characterization. Hands-on experience with instrumentation essential for proteinpurification and characterization, especially BioRad/AKTA FPLC, SDSPAGE and Western Blot. Work independently to perform protein analysis including (butnot limited to) CE SDS, ITC, SPR, U/HPLC, DSF, and cell basedfunctional assays. Excellent oral, presentation and written communication skillsrequired.
Minimum Education and/or
Training:
Bachelor’s degree in arelevant scientific area is required.
Minimum Experience:
5+ years ofresearch experience is required with a Bachelor’s degree. 3+ years of experience is required with a Master’s degree. No prior experience required with a PhD. Strong knowledge and experience in understanding andapplication of underlying principles related to techniques beingperformed. Experience in R D methods and processes in lab setting, andexecution of research projects for the laboratory preferred. Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.
