$ 18.04-26.71 USD UPMC Hamot Women’s Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join our Gynecology team! Apply now to join a unit with great teamwork and a diverse patient population! This position is full-time, rotating day/night shifts. Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.
Purpose:
The Patient Care Technician provides essential patient care and departmental support under the guidance of nurses or physicians, following established protocols. Core responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning, as well as performing point-of-care testing, vital signs, intake and output monitoring, and telemetry setup. The role also involves tasks like applying simple dressings, collecting specimens, using bladder scanners, and supporting hospital-acquired condition prevention. In addition to meeting all standard competencies, the technician may be required to perform advanced skills based on departmental needs, including phlebotomy, peripheral IV and Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube management.
Responsibilities:
Suggests and supports departmental changes and quality initiatives. Takes responsibility for assignments and views challenges positively.
Maintains awareness of behavior’s impact on department efficiency.
Performs core nursing assistant duties: ADLs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, I&O, telemetry, HAC/PSI prevention, dressings, restraints, bladder scans, specimen collection, and patient transport. Reports equipment issues and communicates effectively with other departments.
Builds respectful, professional relationships and assists with unit-wide tasks like call lights, phones, meal trays, and patient transport. Accepts feedback, identifies learning needs, and seeks opportunities to improve skills and performance.
Communicates clearly with the healthcare team and demonstrates cultural sensitivity and professionalism. Supports workplace safety and maintains accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
Assists with patient procedures, therapies, and provides feedback to RNs on patient status. Educates patients and families under RN direction; manages restraints per protocol. Adheres to all patient care and hospital policies, including safety and standard precautions.
Documents accurately and completes tasks efficiently, including clerical duties as needed.
Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
In addition to the standard required competencies, the Patient Care Technician will achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12 lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Enrollment in a nursing program with: 1 year of general healthcare experience, 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, or completion of at least 1 nursing program clinical rotation.
Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire. Successful completion of basic information system training.
Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
