Job Summary The William L. Jenkins Forensic Center, located in the scenic and vibrant Johnson City, Tennessee, is seeking a dedicated part-time temporary Autopsy Technician 1 to support forensic pathologists in conducting thorough postmortem examinations. In this critical role, the Autopsy Technician will assist with a range of essential tasks, including preparing the autopsy suite, organizing necessary paperwork, and specimen containers, and ensuring the body is ready for examination. The technician will also support forensic pathologists during the autopsy process by handling tasks such as moving bodies, photographing evidence, taking x-rays, collecting and packaging evidence, documenting personal effects, gathering toxicology specimens, performing evisceration and organ weighing, and restoring the body after examination. Additional responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining the autopsy suite and workstations. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to vital forensic work and requires a commitment to precision, organization, and professionalism. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Ability to work safely with chemical, biological, microbiological, pathogenic, and other potential hazards.
Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written).
Ability to be thorough and pay meticulous attention to detail when performing tasks and completing documentation.
Ability to be open to change and new information; adapt behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high-stress situations. Physical Demands
Must be physically capable of standing for extended periods and performing moderately labor-intensive tasks.
Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs without assistance.
Must have the physical strength to assist in moving decedents, including pushing, pulling, or transferring bodies weighing over 400 lbs (with assistance) between autopsy tables.
Proficiency in using a variety of autopsy instruments and specialized equipment.
Must be comfortable operating a range of office machinery and technical equipment, including digital cameras, x-ray machines, computers, and photocopiers.
Strong attention to detail and dexterity in handling delicate tasks in a precise and efficient manner. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a related field, with coursework in Anatomy and Physiology.
One (1) year of full-time experience in emergency medical services, hospital settings, funeral homes, or donor services.
Experience working with decedents or in a forensic or medical environment is highly preferred. Salary $15.00 per hour
