Biological Scientist II University of Florida – 4.2 Palm Beach, FL Job Details Full-time $50,000 – $60,000 a year 2 days ago Qualifications Biology Statistical software Doctoral degree Word processing Laboratory experience Mid-level Master’s degree Driver’s License Bachelor’s degree Computer skills 1 year Communication skills Full Job Description Participate in and coordinate field trials to screen new genotypes at different selection stages (seedling stage, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4) of the sugarcane breeding program and collect data on cane and sugar yield. Communicate and collaborate with the team of technicians and scientists from the Florida Sugar Cane League to coordinate implementation of on-farm trials and data collection. Rate disease symptoms in field on naturally infected plants and in inoculated tests. Assist in collecting and processing samples for serological and molecular assays; assist scientists to collect agronomic data for sugarcane related research. Plant, map, maintain and develop populations of sugarcane for research; this will entail collecting agronomic and disease evaluations on the individual clones (genotypes). Collect, tabulate, maintain and analyze data at a team level for breeding and pathology program. Lead the team efforts to calibrate sucrose analysis equipment such as cane presentation system (CPS) and MicroNIR.
Expected Salary:
$50k – $60k annually; commensurate with skills and experience
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization (agronomy or plant biology) or master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience; or Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field. Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred.
