Job Description

We are seeking a Sr. Research Specialist II to join Dr. Nagy’s lab at All Children’s Hospital. The primary focus in the Nagy laboratory is to study epigenomics of cell type specification and the role of macrophages in tissue regeneration, metabolism and tumor growth and metastasis. The individual in this role will apply advanced knowledge of mouse breeding and colony management, tissue culture and molecular biology (PCR, Western blot, molecular cloning), general lab organization, and training and day-to-day oversight of lab assistants. The Sr. Research Specialist II will make intellectual contributions to the scientific research interests of the lab utilizing specialized and sophisticated instrumentation including flow cytometry and next generation sequencing based technologies (ATA-seq, ChIP-Seq, CUT and RUN, GRO-Seq etc). This individual is responsible for troubleshooting, applying specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions and training/guiding other laboratory personnel. In collaboration with the PI, this individual will make project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction. This individual contributes to writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants and applies independent thought to make decisions with the PI. Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesDevelops, designs, and manages specialized research projects and/or coordinates own objectives.

Utilizes specialized knowledge to set up and run sophisticated instrumentation and interprets the results. Performs sophisticated data analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience, e.g. RNA-sequencing data, metabolomics data, proteomics data and lipidomics dataConduct in vivo inflammatory studies in laboratory mice.

Independently develops protocol criteria.

Develop and follow protocols for in vitro and in vivo assays, design experiments to investigate gene function in metabolism and oversee research projects and provide oversight of trainees.

Help team building with other members in the lab. Will guide, direct and facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day to day problems.

Organize a regular journal club (monthly) and invite other groups in the program to participateActs as a consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new technologies, protocols and uses of equipment. Advises PI on experimental design and advises on research methods. Co-authors publications and grant proposals. Contributes original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to reports, abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposals. Independently performs all experiments and research assays related to laboratory interests.

Enhance problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and or professional presentations. Collaborates with other technologists, managers and faculty both inside, and possibly outside, of JHU.Makes decisions regarding research projects that require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making recommendations for changes to research projects.

Perform routine operational activities and day-to-day laboratory management, including but not limited to evaluation and acquisition of supplies and major equipment, inventory review, equipment maintenance to ensure the laboratory remains operational. Organize the weekly lab-meeting and coordinate with the PI.May provide work direction to staff, including recommendations for hire/fire and evaluation of performance.

Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in Biology, Biotechnology or related field.

Six years’ experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques in the fields of molecular biology, epigenomics and genetics.

Experience with next generation sequencing based technologies (ATA_seq, RNA.Seq, ChIP-Seq) and cellular assays (flowcytometry, ELISA).Experience with in vivo studies in laboratory mice.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred QualificationsMaster’s Degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related field.
