Responsibilities Postdoctoral Fellow Position inParticle Radiotherapy Radiobiology, including DNA Damage Response,Immunotherapy, and Cancer Metabolism Mayo Clinic Cancer Center -Ebner/Hitosugi Laboratory The Ebner/Hitosugi Laboratory at theworld-renowned Mayo Clinic Cancer Center is seeking a highlymotivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our dynamic team. Ourresearch focuses on the utilization of high linear energy transferradiotherapy, including particle radiotherapy (proton, carbon-ion,others) and other methods of high-LET radiotherapy delivery. Ourfocus includes the DNA damage response (with close collaborationsin the Mutter/Lou laboratories) and radiobiologies inherent to thisunique form of therapy, interplay with anti-tumoral immunity, andmetabolomic evaluation of the full cellular response tocombinatorial therapies. Our primary areas of focus are(osteo)sarcoma as well as head and neck malignancies, incorporatingparticle beam radiotherapy, DNA repair inhibitors, immunotherapy, and multiomic analyses, including of clinical trial samples. Who WeAre Our lab is a highly collaborative and innovative researchenvironment led by experts in the field:
- Dr. Taro Hitosugi – Aworld leader in cancer metabolism with an NIH-funded laboratory andhigh-impact publications.
- Dr.
Daniel Ebner – Physician-scientistspecializing in Radiation Oncology, with expertise in translationalclinical trials and pre-clinical mechanistic research. We workclosely with top cancer biologists, clinicians, and globalinvestigators at international radiotherapy centers tomechanistically understand the advantages of high-LET radiotherapy(Bragg Peak protons, carbon-ions, alpha particles), with potentialfor beamtime delivery in Europe and Asia. Some of the key questionswe explore include:
- How do traditionally treatment resistantcancers demonstrating poor immunotherapy response (such asosteosarcoma and head and neck cancers) respond to high-LETradiotherapy, and how might this generate therapeutic niches fortargeted treatment amplification?
- How do novel delivery methodsof radiotherapy, such as spatial fractionation, augment and amplifythese effects?
- Taking a broad view of cancer response toradiation, are there alternate paths by which we can target thecellular response to radiation?
Your Role As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will spearhead cutting-edge projects focusing on novelradiation techniques, small molecule radiosensitizers, andimmunotherapy for sarcoma and head and neck cancers.
Your researchwill involve:
- State-of-the-art experimental techniques, includingBP proton irradiation in murine tumor models, in vitro alphaparticle irradiation, carbon-ion radiotherapeutic delivery intandem with collaborators in Europe and Asia, and advancedmolecular biology methods.
- Multiomics and imaging approaches, such as multiplexed immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, RNA-seq,whole-exome sequencing (WES), (phospho)proteomics,metabolomics/metabolic tracing analysis and spatialomics in tumormodels and patient-derived tissues.
- Investigating how high-LETradiation uniquely damages cancer cells, leading to cancer-specificradiosensitization and enhanced immunotherapy responses.
Why JoinUs? Joining the Ebner/Hitosugi Lab means becoming part of anenvironment that nurtures scientific growth and career development.
We offer:
- Access to world-class resources, mentorship, andtraining
- Opportunities to present at major conferences andcollaborate globally
- A supportive environment where you canmentor and be mentored, shaping the future of cancer research LabCulture We thrive on teamwork, diversity, and innovation.
Expect acollaborative and inclusive atmosphere, with regular lab meetings, social events, and a shared commitment to advancing cancerresearch. Qualifications We seek candidates with a Ph.D. (orequivalent) in Cancer Biology, Radiobiology, DNA Damage/Repair,Immunology, Metabolism or a related field. Preference will be givento those who have at least one first-author publication in therelevant fields. Experience with the above technologies a plus, asis prior coding experience (Python, R, and/or MatLab). The mostimportant qualities we value are:
- A passion for scientificdiscovery
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Independence and drivefor excellence
