JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Researcher 1 coordinates the operation of the laboratory for research on sickle cell disease and other diseases using human and mouse genetics and molecular biology techniques in the Department of Genetics, Genomics and Informatics. This position assists postdoctoral fellows and trains and assists students, including graduate, medical students, and visiting scientists. Responsibilities
Performs molecular biology and cell culture techniques, including transfection and electroporation, microscopy, quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry.
Breeds, genotypes, weans, and maintains mice.
Extracts DNA, RNA, and protein from tissues of mice and humans.
Maintains up-to-date records of laboratory inventory, mice status, and experimental data within the in-house mouse database.
Collects and deposits data, writes experimental protocols, places and records supply/animal/equipment acquisitions.
Assists and trains students and postdocs in lab techniques, mouse handling, cell culture and molecular biology experiments.
Evaluates lab equipment needs for repair, replacement, or purchase of new equipment ensuring compatibility with research application.
Maintains all laboratory components, calibrates lab equipment, and orders lab supplies.
Oversees laboratory maintenance daily.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in a research lab with knowledge of genetic and molecular biology using mouse models; OR Master’s Degree and one (1) year of experience in a research lab with knowledge of genetic and molecular biology using mouse models.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to instruct investigators at all levels in specialized techniques and be well organized.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to interpret results and translate into recommendations and future experiments.
Ability to compile data and information into a report.

WORK SCHEDULE
