Lab Manager Summary of Position:

The Chemical Technician maintains the chemical and metal inventories, supports the waste treatment technician and assists the Lab Manager in the sustainment and improvement of maintenance of chemical baths to ensure that EPCO finishing and anodizing is defect free.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Requisition and addition of chemicals to plating operations (Chemical Stockroom):
  • Understands safety information about chemicals and chemical handling;
  • Receive and understand add sheets for chemical name/location/quantities;
  • Understand and execute process for chemical dumps and storage;
  • Prepare mixtures of chemicals to add to tanks;
  • Use of Pumps and Forklifts to move and transfer chemicals;
  • Understand PPE requirements;
  • Use of Chemical Management Software to record receipt of chemistry, removal of chemistry, acknowledgement of tank makeups and additions;
  • Complete a physical count of all chemistry and materials inventory on a regular basis, at least quarterly.
  • Pretreatment wastewater operations and support (Waste Treatment):
  • Operate general waste treatment functions including
  • Manual Additions of neutralizing chemicals/polymer mixing/antifoam adjustments;
  • Maintain chemical totes for automated system;
  • Respond to alarms to the pretreatment system;
  • Monitor water appearance; Unloading and drying sludge (press and dryer);
  • Maintain roll off container as F006 Sludge; Test boiler discharge totes, pretreatment waters, and other spent chemicals for pretreatment processing.
  • Sample procurement and assistance (Lab): Tank sampling and deactivation/reactivation as necessary.
  • Safety and Environmental Compliance support (General Areas of Responsibility):
  • Perform compliance auditing for safety showers, eyewash stations, forklifts, and fire extinguishers for stockrooms and basement to ensure continuous functionality. Report any inadequacies to Maintenance Manager.
  • Perform housekeeping and inspections for chemical and material stockrooms.
  • Light maintenance of transfer equipment.
  • Assist with Hazardous waste spill clean-up as necessary.
  • Understand PPE requirements including respiratory
  • Coordinate activities of the department with related activities of other departments to ensure efficiencies and economies.
  • Maintain a favorable working relationship with other company associates to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate which will be conducive to maximize associate morale, productivity and efficiency/effectiveness.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in a timely, efficient and effective manner in accordance with established company policies to achieve the overall objectives of this position.
Quality Management System Requirements:

∙Understand the requirements of Erie Plating Company quality system registrations and accreditations. ∙Apply the quality system requirements as appropriate for assigned areas of responsibility. ∙Use continuous improvement tools and data analysis to reach quality objectives and foster an environment of continuous improvement.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; 1

  • 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Training Required (Training is Provided)
  • Trained as forklift operator
  • Trained in RCRA Hazardous Waste Training
  • Trained in
HAZWOPER/HAZMAT
  • Trained in
DOT HAZMAT
  • Chemical Safety Training
  • General Lab, Add, and WT procedures
  • Computer operating system and manual operating system for Pretreatment
  • Chemical Management Software training
  • Respirator Training
  • First Aid (optional)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general documents, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and compliance auditors.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of practical problems. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
