Position Summary:
The Manufacturing Technical Group (MTG), comprised of laboratory and pilot plant operations, provides technical and development services to Sterling’s Specialty Chemicals manufacturing facilities. MTG is tasked with the development, scale-up and introduction of new products and processes, the improvement of existing products and processes, and providing less than full scale quantities of products for trials or to meet low demand product requests. Within MTG, the Development Chemist supports MTG objectives as well as meeting company Health, Quality, Safety and Environmental expectations. Under direction of a Senior Chemist, the Development Chemist provides technical support for manufacturing activities, new product introduction and laboratory activities. Responsibilities and Accountabilities (May include but are not limited to): Provide ongoing small-scale laboratory quantities of materials for trials and low demand products of interest. Laboratory experimentation supporting NPI (new production introduction) processes in the lab thru pilot and plant introduction.to scale up new products. Provide process support as required. Support process improvement activities – including onsite support and laboratory & pilot plant support. Determine technical feasibility of and approve raw material substitutions for manufacturing locations. Demonstrate manufacturing production viability of new product. Provide manufacturing support (often on-site) to production facilities during new product startup. Work closely with technical teams with sites to support Sterling Specialty Chemicals manufacturing locations.
Responsible for:
Timely fulfillment of sample order requests. Maintain accurate records of sample shipments. Maintain accurate records of Laboratory. Perform appropriate housekeeping and safety inspections to ensure compliance with governmental regulations regarding proper hazardous waste management and testing Perform maintenance and calibration for lab and test equipment. Comply with Plant Health, Safety and Environmental rules and policies. Support Team with accomplishing Group, Plant and Company goals and objectives.

Experience Required:
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in manufacturing, research and/or development environment in the specialty chemicals or related fields. Two-year Associates of Science degree in chemistry or 5 years equivalent work experience in chemistry preferred Technical knowledge and experience in emulsions; preferably in a direct manufacturing environment is a plus. Demonstrated ability to execute laboratory experimentation with minimum supervision. Technical competence in laboratory analytical methods including the use of instruments such as gas chromatographs and liquid chromatography. Communications and organizational skills and a proven ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.
