Job Description

Chemistry Lab Manager 4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 74 King Street, Saint Augustine, FL 32084 The Natural Sciences Department at Flagler College is seeking a 1 0 – month, full- time, L ab M anager to support Chemistry and Physics courses . The y will enhance the Natural Sciences program by working in collaboration with the Natural Sciences Lab Manager to support students and faculty, manag e facilities and equipment, assur e safe laboratory procedures, and assist with compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. T he Chemistry and Physics Lab Manager must have a working knowledge of a diverse range of topics including chemistry, physics, science education, information technology, and equipment maintenance. The y also must be very organized to plan and schedule a myriad of lab activities and extremely flexible to respond quickly to needs that arise.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities:

Establish a culture of safety, good laboratory practices and teamwork Support faculty teaching activities in the lab by preparing equipment and supplies. Necessary skills include equipment calibration and maintenance and chemical preparation . Support student and faculty investigations and projects by assisting in method development, supply procurement, processing samples, compiling data, or other tasks . Contribute to d evelop ing and implement ing safety and training procedures for faculty and students to assure the safe use of the labs across a range of activities by people with varying levels of experience . Promote culture of safety and good decision making . Evaluate, develop, recommend, and implement novel laboratory activities and pedagogical strategies particularly for Chemistry and Physics classes including General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Organic Chemistry , Physics I and Physics II . Assist with m aintain ing scientific instrumentation and computers acros s teaching labs, and auxiliary research and prep areas in good working order. Assist with regular maintenance routines and logs. Assist with p erform ing or oversee ing the repair and maintenance of balances, d eionization systems, laboratory refrigerators and freezers, ice makers, and other scientific equipment Prepare, maintain , and dispose of chemical reagents and hazardous materials in a safe and approved manner. Assist with the m anage ment , supervis ion , and train ing of work-study students to support chemistry and physics . Coordinate with the Natural Sciences Lab Manager and Department Chair to purchase supplies and track expenses . Work with the Natural Sciences Lab Manager , Maintenance and Housekeeping to keep the laboratory facilities and equipment clean and safe . Coordinate with the Natural Sciences Lab Manager and Environmental, Health and Safety department to maintain a safe environment and achieve compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations . Maintain expertise in the field of lab management, student learning, safety, and government regulations through continuing education . Drive College vehicles and cart s Additional duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications:

A bachelor’ s degree in Chemistry or a related field is required ; Candidates must be highly organized with excellent time management skills and be able to work independently and in a team Must be able to work with a large and diverse group of people, including faculty, staff, students, and vendors Excellent attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent organizational skills Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate Experience with instrument troubleshooting

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Regularly required to exert up to 15 pounds of force, with occasional lifting or moving of items weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking. Ability to communicate appropriately with students/colleagues.
