The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Food & Drug Protection Division has five functioning sections, including the Food Section, the Dairy Section, the Feed Section, the Drug Section, and the Administrative Services Section. In addition, analytical support is provided to the Food & Feed Sections by the Food & Drug Protection Division’s three laboratory sections, i.e. the Inorganic Chemistry Section, Organic Chemistry Section, and Microbiology Section. The Division protects the health, welfare, and economic interests of consumers of foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices by ensuring, through inspections and analysis, that these products are wholesome and properly labeled. The Organic Chemistry Section analyzes food, animal feed, agricultural materials, and environmental samples for pesticides residues, mycotoxins, and drugs using liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled with various detectors, including mass spectrometers, tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers, flame ionization detectors, and various optical detectors. The section additionally evaluates the formulation of commercially available pesticides and antifreeze samples. The Extraction Task Force within the Organic Chemistry Section is responsible for receiving, processing, and extracting a high volume of diverse samples for residue analysis. Extraction methods include but are not limited to QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe extractions), solid-liquid extractions, liquid-liquid extractions, and solid-phase extractions. The Extraction Task Force additionally maintains pesticide meats and standards and prepares calibration curves, working standards, and controls for analysis. This Chemist II position serves as the lead of the Extraction Task Force, organizing, assigning, and reviewing the sample receipt, processing, and extraction activities of a rotating staff of chemists and a medical laboratory assistant. This position is also responsible for maintaining the Organic Chemistry Section’s inventory of pesticide meats and standards and overseeing preparation of working standards and calibrants. This position additionally develops and delivers training on a wide array of sample extraction methods and sample preparation activities. All work performed by this position and the Extraction Task Force’s rotating staff must be performed in compliance with quality management system and

requirements. This position performs other duties as assigned. The N.C. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: Experience with at least one of the following: GC coupled with flame ionization detectors (FID) or mass spectrometry (MS); LC coupled with UV detectors, fluorescence detectors, diode array detectors, or mass spectrometry; ion chromatography (IC); or other computer workstation driven scientific analytical equipment. Experience extracting pesticides from samples. Ability to organize and assign the work of a rotating staff of chemists. Ability to develop, deliver, and evaluate training on extraction procedures. Ability to independently perform and record complex standardized, non-standardized, and developmental laboratory tests and procedures. Ability to pass a respirator medical fit test and to work with matrices such as grass, hay, and nuts. Ability to analyze results, interpret methodology, and understand and solve complex theoretical problems. Employment may be contingent upon the ability to pass a respirator medical and fit test.

Prefer candidate with experience with a quality management system and/or
ISO 17025.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor s degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
