Director of Research, Emergency Medicine 4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 4202 East Fowler Ave, Tampa, FL 33620 The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine provides clinical care at Tampa General Hospital across three sites (a Level 1 trauma center and two free-standing emergency departments), representing over 120,000 patient encounters per year with over 40 faculty members. Outpatient clinical services continue to expand in addiction, medical toxicology and primary care sports medicine. The three-year USF EM residency program began in 2003 and graduates 10 residents per year with a board pass rate of 96%. USF EM is highly integrated into undergraduate medical education. The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive experience in clinical research administration within an academic medical center or healthcare setting. Strong leadership skills are essential, with a proven ability to develop and manage research infrastructure. Additionally, the Director must possess in-depth knowledge of regulatory compliance, contract negotiations, and clinical trial management. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are necessary to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders. This role is instrumental in advancing the department’s research mission by ensuring the successful execution of high-impact clinical research initiatives. Direct and manage the clinical, scientific, operational compliance, and regulatory aspects of clinical research and sponsored research related to the Department of Emergency Medicine and the TGH Emergency Department Clinical Research. Ensure adheres to all federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to clinical research compliance and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and OSHA standards; follows established policies and procedures and other relevant regulatory requirements by developing source documents and validation studies. Oversee day-to-day Research Operations, providing guidance and support to all shared resource users. Additionally, responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of department-sponsored projects and department research including federally funded clinical trials and non-clinical trials, industry supported studies, investigator-initiated studies, other faculty research, and support of the department education mission to facilitate resident and student research. Provides supervision, development, training, and work coordination for research staff within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, scheduling, assigning work, and evaluating employee performance while ensuring staff receive timely and appropriate communication. This role oversees day-to-day operations to maintain FDA inspection readiness and provides coverage as needed to support staffing demands. Additionally, the Director collaborates on new study start-ups, working with clinical nurses and investigators while educating nurse managers on upcoming studies. Track and maintain reporting and financials for departmental research programs, including PI, department, and division activities, as well as the status of studies (pending, enrolling, or in closeout). Develop a financial dashboard that outlines the statuses of each project and their contribution margins. This includes preparing mid-year and annual executive summaries and research reports for the Department Chair, Vice Chairs, Division Directors, and Senior Administrative Staff. The Director applies advanced knowledge of clinical research coordination, administration, and fiscal management to support clinical trials effectively. Additionally, this role serves as the central point of contact for the interdisciplinary team regarding day-to-day clinical trial operations Coordinate and serve as the project lead for special projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with research goals and grant objectives. This role oversees research-related activities for assigned projects, including screening, enrollment, and retention of study participants, coordinating study visits, and ensuring high-quality data collection. The Director implements study protocols in compliance with all regulatory and institutional requirements under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Institutional Review Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Certified in Clinical Research with a reputable clinical research society. Experience working in a large or complex health organization. Experience leading clinical operations in pharma or contract research organizations. Experience establishing and managing external partnerships between pharma and contract research organizations and academic health centers.3-5 years management/leadership level experience in clinical research, 3-5 years in a supervisory role.
