OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

The MedicalSupport Specialist determines donor eligibility to donate plasma,management of donor adverse events, review of laboratory testresults, donor notification of unsuitable test results. The MedicalSupport Specialist works under the direct supervision of the CenterManager (or Assistant Manager as applicable) for operationalguidance and under the supervision of the Center Physician formedical issues. Ideally, the Medical Support Specialist will befamiliar with regulations of the plasma collection industry and/ora manufacturing environment. The Medical Support Specialist followsguidance provided by BioLife Medical Affairs and provides centerlevel support of environmental, health and safety (EHS).

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Donor Eligibility (85%)
  • Determine donoreligibility accurately and in a timely manner, to include, propermanagement of informed consent, AIDS education and confidentialself-exclusion, medical history interview and acceptancerequirements, physical examination, blood testing, and reviewingSerological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE) as required.
  • Evaluateand manage donor reaction(s), which occurs at the facility asoutlined in the SOPs. Follow applicable SOPs for medicalemergencies including the execution of Center Physician’s standingorders and donor transport to emergency care facilities.
  • Managedonor deferral; reviews test results and notify donors ofunsuitable test results per applicable SOPs.
  • Initiation andinvestigation of Post Donation Information (PDI).
  • Refer to theCenter Physician or Medical Affairs (as applicable) when in need ofproviding unacceptable findings to donors, problem solving, orguidance concerning medical or technical issues, including donorsafety and eligibility.
  • Demonstrate continued competency in theperformance of job responsibilities and complete periodicassessment with the Center Physician per applicable SOPs.
  • Assistthe EHS program as required per SOPs or as requested by the EHSManager (5%)
  • Conduct pre-placement evaluation of new hires toinclude assessment of medical history questionnaire.
  • Support theHepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees asapplicable.
  • Maintain applicable employee medical records.
  • Member of EHS site committee and assist in training of employees,as required.
  • Manage employee incidents and determine whetherfurther evaluation is required by occupational health/ER. Refer toEHS guidance regarding employee incidents.
  • Administer first aidto employees as needed.
  • Act as Pandemic Coordinator whenauthorized by EHS.
  • Supports investigations associated withpandemic threats within local community as indicated by EHS orMedical Affairs.
  • May perform all required duties in the area ofMedical History (including, but not limited to): (10%)
  • Greetdonors as they enter and exit the donor floor.
  • Take and recorddonor pulse, blood pressure, and temperature measures and monitorelectronic donor questionnaire system.
  • Perform finger stick, testsample, and record other donor measures to include hematocrit,total protein and weight. Enter donor information into the DonorInformation System (DIS). Interaction

  • Attend staff meetings and other teammeetings as required.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
Essential:

Graduate of a recognized educational program.

Desired:
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years in a clinicalor hospital setting preferred.
