Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi, the MDMR manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands, and waterfront areas to provide optimal commercial, recreational, educational, and economical uses of these resources that are consistent with environmental concerns and social changes. Our mission is to enhance, protect, and conserve the state’s marine interests.
About the Position
This position is involved in the planning and execution of monitoring and research projects for the Shrimp and Crab Bureau of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR). Duties include shrimp and crab sampling, data management, monitoring of Mississippi’s inter-jurisdictional fisheries, data collection, and analysis to assist in opening and closing of the annual Mississippi shrimp season, writing proposals, research reports, outreach narratives, and conducting cooperative programs with stakeholders for the continued research and effective management of Mississippi’s marine fisheries, and the development and implementation of marine fisheries management recommendations and regulatory changes. The work is subject to periodic review by an Environmental/Natural Resources Specialist Team Lead to whom the incumbent reports.
What you’ll need to be Successful
The ideal candidate should have: a working knowledge coastal waters; knowledge of the most effective marine fisheries methods / techniques needed to collect data for fisheries management; knowledge of the environmental conditions that impact various marine habitats; skill in the use of marine vessel equipment including radar, GPS, video recorder, radios, etc.; ability to identify the potential consequences that various fisheries management decisions may have on the biological, social, and economic aspects of a particular fishery; knowledge of the most effective and accurate methods for the statistical analysis of various fisheries data; ability to work cooperatively with other marine fisheries agencies in the exchange of information both at the state and federal level; knowledge of fisheries regulations; ability to understand the potential ramifications of fisheries regulations; skill in the use of computers to organize information which is needed for documentation and reporting requirements and skill in writing concise and accurate technical reports; good verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to appropriately interact with a wide variety of people and provide assistance to stakeholders; and, ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion. Small boat handling and seamanship skills are preferred.
