DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist I.•This is an anticipated vacancy.
This position is expected to be available on July 26, 2025. •It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
The Environmental Specialist I position provides primary compliance oversight of Non-Discharge and NPDES wastewater operations located within the region. Primary job duties include performing on-site compliance inspections for NPDES and Non-discharge wastewater facilities as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct inspections at wastewater treatment and disposal facilities to determine compliance with permit conditions and operational requirements.
Evaluate wastewater facility monitoring data to ensure compliance with treatment levels and environmental standards.
Prepare a variety of enforcement documents in response to identified compliance issues at regulated facilities.
Collect, analyze and manipulate information/data. Respond to citizen complaints and inspect sites where water quality standards and other environmental violations may have occurred. The ability to carry field equipment (up to 50 lbs.), work out of doors during inclement weather conditions, walk in heavily vegetated areas, walk in streams, steep terrain and to be able to swim since some boat work may be involved. Valid Driver License.

The Division of Water Resources’ mission is to protect the state’s water supplies and foster stewardship of this natural resource for use by current and future generations of citizens. The Division comprises five
Sections:
Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Animal and Coal Ash Operations; and Water Planning. This goal is achieved through providing technical assistance, consultative services, permitting of regulated entities, certification of water treatment plant operators and wastewater operators, inspection and compliance activities, laboratory analysis and testing, and educational outreach and training.
