This is a full-time position located in Augusta. This opportunity allows partial telework with management approval. -LIMITED PERIOD POSITION- The Maine CDC Office of Injury and Violence Prevention (OIVP) is looking for an epidemiologist to provide support for community violence prevention programs across Maine. This program will coordinate work creating protective environments, promoting healthy family relationships, connecting young people to caring adults, and strengthening skills in youth and young adults. This position will lead efforts in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data related to community violence, helping to guide prevention strategies and inform public health policies across the state. This position will work closely with other state offices and departments, community organizations, and other public health professionals to develop, implement, and evaluate violence prevention programs aimed at improving the safety and well-being of our communities.

Core Responsibilities:

As a key member of the OIVP team, your core responsibilities will include:

  • Lead collection, management and analysis of data related to community violence
  • Develop and maintain surveillance systems to monitor trends in violence, identify risk factors, and track the effectiveness of community violence prevention programming
  • Use data to identify patterns, causes and consequences of community violence and work with other program staff to identify evidence-based strategies for community violence prevention
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of statewide community violence prevention programs
  • Prepare comprehensive data briefs, fact sheets and other surveillance reports for dissemination to key stakeholders according to set timeframes
  • Assist internal and external state partners with respect to injury and violence data surveillance and other epidemiologic data analyses, interpretation and evaluation
  • Oversee public-facing data portals and websites
  • Prepare and present reports, findings and recommendations to a variety of audiences
  • Assist in the development of public awareness campaigns
Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field or a Bachelor’s Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field and two (2) years professional experience in epidemiology. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred candidates will also have:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in community violence prevention
  • Experience collecting public health or clinical data, managing databases, making data linkages, and creating statistical reports; including proficiency in analytic software and data visualization tools
  • Experience writing comprehensive reports, infographics, fact sheets, and other resources on public health or clinical topics
  • Ability to tailor products and messaging based on the intended audience
  • Experience delivering oral presentations on public health or clinical topics and communicating results to public and professional audiences
  • Knowledge of public health frameworks, violence prevention strategies, and social determinants of health
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners Thinking about applying?
