Position Description Background:

The mission of the Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) is to protect, improve, and sustain the health and well-being of all people in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. The Division of Epidemiology supports this mission by collecting, managing, and analyzing data on illness, wellness and behaviors in Metro Nashville and Davidson County.

The Position:

The epidemiologist in this role will be assigned to the Epidemiology Division, involved in department-wide epidemiological support, data stewardship, monitoring community health status, project planning and evaluation, and staff training. This position supports a multi-county drug overdose monitoring and response project in Middle Tennessee. The position is funded by a federal grant, the High impact Area (HIA) grant, that is managed by the Tennessee Department of Health. The incumbent will help develop and support innovative cross-sector responses to the overdose crisis in the Mid-Cumberland High Impact Area. Typical Duties Conducts surveillance related to overdoses and provides data to inform the public health response to those events and crises in the assigned HIA counties. Work closely with Tennessee Department of Health staff involved in the HIA or with other statewide and regional overdose response efforts.
Provides technical expertise and leadership to improve cooperative data collection, management, and analysis for overdose surveillance. Develops methods to support the timely data collection from sources such as EMS, Law Enforcement, the Medical Examiner, hospitals, and other community and national partners.
Identifies and evaluates existing data sources and surveillance systems to improve data quality and timely evaluation efforts.
Prepares and presents reports to all stakeholders through varied presentations to inform of overdose trends, support clinical, policy, and strategic decision making, and identify at-risk individuals and populations.
Assists in the evaluation of program activities and provides recommendations for continuous quality improvement. Participates in the preparation and maintenance of reports related to grant reporting requirements.
Participates in surveillance and alerting of overdose spikes; this may include occasional after-hours work. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics, or health informatics and 1 year of experience in conducting epidemiological studies, surveillance, or community assessment and planning. Or
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a health, biomedical, environmental, or social science and 2 years of experience conducting epidemiological studies, surveillance, or community assessment and planning. Valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.
