Summary of Job Duties:
The Department of Food Science at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UADA) is seeking a highly organized and scientifically skilled Food Scientist to join our team at the Arkansas Food Innovation Center at the Market Center of the Ozarks (AFIC@MCO). Located in downtown Springdale, AR, this multi-faceted food facility is part of the Northwest Arkansas Food Systems initiative, supporting regional food and farm businesses through food innovation, training, and research. The Food Scientist will report to the Executive Director of AFIC@MCO and be responsible for overseeing quality assurance documentation, supporting food product research and development, and assisting with AFIC@MCO programming and operations.
Specific responsibilities will include:
Quality Assurance Documentation and Compliance
- Develop, monitor, maintain, and review production and food safety documentation to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Conduct internal audits and ensure readiness for external inspections. Research and Development
- Support R D projects, including ingredient sourcing and benchtop formulation.
- Assist faculty and partners with processing trials and data collection.
- Document experiments, analyze data, and prepare technical reports. AFIC@MCO Projects and Outreach
- Collaborate with AFIC@MCO staff to deliver workshops, training programs, and technical assistance to food entrepreneurs.
- Support grant-funded initiatives related to AFIC@MCO’s mission and vision.
- Participate in community engagement events and facility tours.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in food science, food safety, Culinology, or a related field. Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience in food safety, quality assurance, or product development in a regulated food manufacturing or research setting. Demonstrated experience working with
HACCP, FDA/USDA
regulations, and GMPs. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods in both laboratory and food production environments.
Desired Qualifications:
HACCP certification and/or PCQI certification. Experience in shared-use kitchens or food innovation environments. Bilingual in English and Spanish or Marshallese Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in regulatory and quality assurance technical writing. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external clients.
