Research and Extension 207 Highway 15-401 Byp W, Bennettsville, SC 29512 Job Summary The agriculture extension agent is an educator, an information provider, a needs assessor, a problem-solving resource for clientele, and networks with the agricultural industry, specialists, extension agents, and agency representatives. Oversees the Sustainable Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment (SANRE) Program. Plans, designs, and implements project activities using research-based findings in sustainable agriculture, natural resources, and the environment to solve problems. Advises, instructs, and assists individuals involved in agriculture production, post-harvesting, agriculture technologies, enterprise marketing, natural resources, and environmental activities. Designs projects to meet the needs of small-scale farmers and woodland owners in compliance with the Plan of Work.
Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:
Work closely with producers, agribusiness, community leaders, Extension Leadership Councils and appropriate agents to identify and prioritize issues, problems and opportunities. Use farm and business visits to remain knowledgeable of specific local needs and problems related to agricultural production, marketing, and environmental protection. Identify potential industry leaders and help develop their capacity to accomplish community and industry goals. Maintain a high level of proficiency in subject matter field by participating in in-service training and professional activities. Provide current research-based information to citizens by employing various delivery methods; meetings/workshops, short courses, field days, tours, on-farm research, demonstrations, and other appropriate teaching methods. Cooperate with public and private organizations and individuals that share Extension’s mission and objectives.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Individuals will work with program leaders and other regional directors and staff in short-term and long-term planning to develop statewide initiatives which reflect the program needs and priorities for the region, as well as the state and federal commitments. Individuals will also provide leadership for the development and successful operation of an overall regional partnering structure or advisory body that allows for program input, development, and evaluation. Minimum Education and Experience Individuals should possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or related area with three (3) years of satisfactory professional job-related experience in agriculture-related areas. Preferred Education and Experience Individuals should possess a master’s in agriculture or related area with at least five (5) years of satisfactory professional job-related experience in agriculture-related areas. Preferred Requirements for Entry into Position Individual should possess a master’s in agriculture or related area with at least five (5) years of satisfactory professional job-related experience in agriculture-related areas. Individual will be required to develop knowledge of the Land Grant University System and the history, philosophy, organization, and the objects of 1890 Research. Additional Application Requirements/Special Instructions to Applicants/Comments This individual will be housed in the Pee Dee Regional office located in Bennettsville, SC, which covers Chesterfield, Dillon, Florence, Marion, and Marlboro counties will provide programs and activities primarily in but will also have programmatic responsibilities as requested throughout the state of SC. The individual must have the ability to perform duties on own initiative while receiving minimal supervision. The employee must be able to use good judgment in making decisions, exhibit a good working relationship with people, and be highly dependable in planning, implementing, and reporting activities. A valid driver’s license is required.
