Position Summary
This multifaceted position addresses elements of the diagnosis and treatment planning for cancer patients seen within the SJ/C system for research. The position duties fall into four distinct components. Beginning with the initial activities associated with the diagnosis of cancer, the Specialist performs clinical research duties including the consenting and education of patients for the collection of tissue, serum and plasma. The Specialist is responsible for the research documentation and tracking associated with the tissue banking program. Additionally, the Specialist will scrub in and assist the surgeons and pathologists with the collection of the tissue specimens and the snap freeze and product preparation for shipping to the Biorepository Alliance of Georgia and the Moffitt Cancer Center. The third and fourth focus areas are associated with the National Cancer Institute’s Biomedical Informatics Grid and the Oncology Meditech Module for the collection and sharing of data related to tissue banking and genetic based clinical trials matching.

Core Job Functions
Prepares tissue collections and snap freezes bio specimens according to NCI Best Practice guidelines in order to protect
DNA & RNA
from cellular damage and lack of cellular integrity for research initiatives. Maintains greater than 90% specimen quality for bio specimen submissions.
Works closely with the LCRP Oncology Research division to comply with IRB requirements, consents all patients submitting bio specimens and complies with the protocol algorithms associated with each type of bio specimens collections.
Invoices appropriately for bio specimens submissions and tracks reimbursements for services rendered to tissue banking research companies.
