Job Summary:
As Testing Personnel under CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist I performs microbiological testing in accordance with standard operating procedures. This includes processing specimens, conducting high and moderate complexity testing, and reporting results critical to diagnosing and treating infectious diseases. Under general supervision, the MLS I ensures test accuracy and regulatory compliance in a BSL-2 environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform qualitative and quantitative microbiological tests on patient specimens (e.g., blood, urine, wound, respiratory samples). Operate and maintain microbiology instruments such as
MALDI-TOF, VITEK, WASP
, and other culture systems. Conduct gram stains, set up and read cultures, identify pathogens, and perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Prepare media and reagents according to protocols; document quality control and calibration. Follow established procedures for CLIA, CAP, and hospital compliance . Identify and troubleshoot instrument or test performance issues; document and report corrective actions. Adhere to proper biosafety procedures when handling infectious specimens. Participate in Proficiency Testing and QA/QI initiatives. Communicate STAT or critical results per policy to appropriate clinical staff.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field required.
Certification:
ASCP or AMT certification preferred or eligibility to obtain.
Experience:
0-2 years in a clinical laboratory preferred, ideally with microbiology exposure.
Skills:
Strong understanding of bacterial morphology and biochemical ID techniques Familiarity with automated systems like MALDI-TOF and VITEK Excellent documentation and critical thinking skills Ability to follow SOPs and regulatory guidelines
