South Carolina Retirement Yes State Insurance Programs Yes Annual Leave Yes Sick Leave Yes Position Description Advertised Job Summary The Ely Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a research project examining the interactions of collections of bacteria and bacteriophages in rhizosphere environments. The candidate, under the general supervision of the PI, will use advanced genetic, molecular and bioinformatics techniques to study how the presence of other bacteria and phages impact the growth and survival of individual bacteria and phages. The goal of this work is to generate information about how bacteria and bacteriophages function in a community environment. The successful candidate will write manuscripts and reports on their research, present their research in group settings, and have access to opportunities to further their professional development. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in area of research specialty. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in laboratory and environmental microbiology. Strong candidates will demonstrate evidence of independence, have effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with others Knowledge/Skills/Abilities The individual must be able to design, conduct, and analyze experimental research. Job Duties Job Duty The Postdoctoral Fellow will design and perform microbiology experiments and bioinformatic analyses independently, with guidance from the principal investigator (PI). Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 40 Job Duty The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research design and implementation. This includes experimental design, recording experimental procedures, analyzing data, and interpreting results. This work also requires reading scientific literature that is relevant to the fellow’s research project. This work is necessary for the fellow to manage and develop their research project, and will be conducted independently, with guidance from the PI. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 30 Job Duty The Postdoctoral Fellow will attend and present data at lab meetings and other relevant meetings and assist in preparing progress reports, manuscripts, and other materials for research dissemination. This work will be conducted independently, with guidance from the PI, and is necessary to receive feedback on the research project and disseminate novel data to the research community. This task will be completed independently and will further the scientific and professional development.
