Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for ensuring the prompt, efficient, and accurate delivery of laboratory test results for medical prognosis, diagnosis, treatment, and research. This role includes managing quality control and compliance documentation, maintaining laboratory equipment and inventory, participating in quality initiatives, and performing assigned CLIA roles to support various lab operations and shifts. The position is assigned to the midnight shift in the Blood Bank, with either 8-hour or 10-hour shifts available. Rotating weekend and holiday coverage is required.
Job Responsibilities:
Execute prompt, efficient, and accurate performance, validation, and reporting laboratory test results for prognosis, diagnosis, treatment, and research purposes. Conduct ongoing documentation of all processes as required (e.g., quality control, compliance, appropriate usage of materials, equipment, and PPE). Comply with document and record management requirements. Perform quality control activities (e.g., reagent, analyzer), document results, and escalate issues as necessary. Assist in the setup, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment within the lab under guidance. Participate in ongoing lab inventory planning, monitoring, and management. Assist in updating assigned sections of procedure and preventive maintenance manuals to reflect current practices. Collect quality data as assigned and assist in Quality Program initiatives as required. Comply with all standards and requirements of the hospital and licensing/accrediting agencies. Inform the supervisor of unusual observations or occurrences in a timely manner. Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution. Training:
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, or a biological, chemical, or physical science, with completion of a medical laboratory training program required.
Minimum Experience:
Medical laboratory skills obtained through clinical rotations or training are required. Previous medical laboratory work experience is preferred. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required by St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital:
If not licensed in Tennessee as a medical laboratory professional, certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist from an approved accrediting organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, NRCC, ABB, ASCPi (if taken after January 2015) is required within six (6) months of hire. Acceptable licenses include Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT)-General, Medical Laboratory Supervisor-General or Categorical Supervisor, Special Analyst, or Categorical Technologist in the assigned laboratory section.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Must be able to stand, walk, sit, kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talk or hear. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Requires specific vision abilities, including close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment is typically quiet. Must be able to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations. Recent blood bank experience is strongly preferred.
