JOB SUMMARY
Perform microbiological research through standardized lab processes. Support the setup and routine organization of a eukaryotic pathogenesis lab. Maintain and organize laboratory equipment and supplies. Other duties as assigned.

Project Coordination/Facilitation:
Prepare microbiological reagents, media, and ensure accurate characterization of lab strains and isolates for ongoing research projects. Characterize samples through standard phenotypic assays (microscopy, colony morphology, plate imaging, dye exclusion, spot dilutions, drug susceptibility, etc.). From these results, create complex or modified growth media tailored to the needs of each experiment. Record all experimental findings, recognize scientifically relevant observations, and communicate any expected or unexpected results to the supervisor and other lab members. Document the phenotypic characteristics of each strain for future studies. 30%

Oversee daily laboratory upkeep, including ordering and organizing supplies, setting up lab equipment, and managing inventory. 25%

Project Development:
Under direct supervision, conceptualize and implement a research project within the scope of the lab, collaborating closely with other lab members to advance scientific objectives. Identify open scientific questions in the field and translate these questions into testable hypotheses. Prepare findings as preliminary data for grant applications and other competitive funding opportunities. 5%

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree
- microbiology or medical technology; or a bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences with academic credits in biology, plus work experience in a setting related to the area of employment.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Master’s Degree in Biology or related field.
Preferred MS in Microbiology, Biochemistry, &/or Genetics Work Experience 1+ years in basic microbiological techniques such as maintenance of bacterial or fungal cultures and nucleic acid purification. Preferred experience with lab organization, standard microbiological assays, experience with fungal cultures and/or drug susceptibility assays. Track record of readily learning new laboratory techniques and assays.

Anticipated Salary Range:
$38,985
- $46,530 Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson’s compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
