Summary:

Geological Exploration Technician I During a training period, to learn the work of a Geological Exploration Technician I and assist other Geological Exploration staff in the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of test boring and other equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data for the design and construction of NHDOT projects. Geological Exploration Technician II To perform skilled work in the mobilization, operation, repair, and maintenance of test boring and other equipment for the purpose of obtaining subsurface data for the design and construction of NHDOT projects.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS

: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Geological Exploration Technician I:
Education:

High school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Experience:

One year of work experience preferably including three months in the operation of light or heavy motor-driven equipment or machinery. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification:

Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with air brakes OR obtain such licensure prior to completion of the one year probationary period. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements. 2. For promotion from Geological Exploration Technician Trainee, labor grade 7 to Geological Exploration Technician I, labor grade 9, employees must: a. Meet the minimum qualification requirements of Geological Exploration Technician I; b. Receive satisfactory annual performance evaluations; c. Be recommended for promotion by supervisor(s). 3. Must work out of a hotel or other similar lodging when project is deemed too far to commute from Concord. 4. All accountabilities must be conducted in full conformance with all risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations, and administrative orders.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS

Knowledge of the operation of core and auger boring equipment and drilling apparatus. Knowledge of the properties and physical characteristics of subsurface rock and soil strata. Knowledge of the operation of combination auger-core boring equipment and drilling apparatus. Ability to safely operate assigned drilling equipment and make minor field adjustments as required. Ability to maintain accurate records of work performed. Ability to lift heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions. Must be willing to work “out of town” when necessary. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the appointing authority.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Geological Exploration Technician I Trains while assisting other Geological Exploration staff in all aspects of mobilizing, operating, repairing, and maintaining test boring and other equipment, and in performing subsurface explorations in accordance with standard procedures. Operates heavy vehicles to move test boring equipment to and around the work site. Learns how to mobilize test boring equipment in areas of difficult access such as wet areas, adjacent to or in roadways, and on steep hillsides. Learns how to set up, maintain, and remove work zone traffic control devices and perform flagging according to standard procedures in or adjacent to roadways. Learns how to take undisturbed samples of cohesive soils, perform field vane shear tests, and install geotechnical instrumentation and groundwater monitoring wells. Learns how to keep an accurate and complete field log of each exploration including soil classification, bedrock information, groundwater measurements, and other pertinent information as required. Operates water pumps, generators, chain saws, and other power equipment used for mobilization to and conduct of subsurface explorations. Geological Exploration Technician II Assists a Geological Exploration Technician III in all aspects of mobilizing, operating, repairing, and maintaining subsurface exploration equipment including: portable, truck, trailer, track, or skid mounted drill rigs, and in performing subsurface explorations in accordance with standard procedures. Assumes the duties of the Geological Exploration Technician III in his/her absence. Operates backhoe equipment for shallow explorations and to assist in the mobilization of off-road drilling equipment, including localized snow removal. Operates heavy vehicles to move test boring and other equipment to and around the work site. Assists in the mobilization of test boring equipment in areas of difficult access such as wet areas, adjacent to or in roadways, and on steep hillsides. Sets up, maintains, and removes work zone traffic control devices and performs flagging according to standard procedures in or adjacent to roadways.
