Auburn University’s Applied Research Institute is actively recruiting applicants for the position of Research Engineer. This position will support the development, setup, and operation of a high-energy proton cyclotron facility dedicated to radiation effects testing on space hardware and electronics. This facility will serve as a key resource for radiation effects research and development, and this role offers the opportunity to be one of the first engineers involved in building and operating this state-of-the-art research center.

Essential Functions Assist in the development, commissioning, and operation of a high-energy proton cyclotron facility.
Oversee daily facility operations, including maintenance, safety adherence, and troubleshooting.
Interface with facility users, providing technical assistance, training, and support for testing and research activities.
Maintain lab equipment and ensure smooth scheduling of testing services.
Implement safety and radiation protection protocols in compliance with regulatory standards.

    Scope of experience:
    Experience relevant to the position, including experience in multiple fields of science or engineering as well as research practices and principles.

This may encompass areas such as mathematics, physical sciences, life sciences, computer science, and other related disciplines.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities Familiarity with engineering staff, methods, practices and programs.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining complex lab equipment.
Experience with radiation measurement devices and safety systems.
Ability to manage facility scheduling and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proactive, and self-motivated.
Experience with control systems and computer-instrument interfacing.
Minimum Technology Skills Minimum License and Certifications Some positions may require licensure as a professional engineer.
Desired Qualifications
Desired Qualifications Master’s degree or above in a related field (engineering or physics).
Experience working with particle accelerators, ion beams, and/or vacuum systems.
Familiarity with radiation effects testing, radiation safety, and protection protocols.
Previous experience in a user-support role, including technical assistance and training.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to take initiative in problem-solving and managing tasks independently.
