Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 General Description Under general guidance, the Health Physicist is responsible for the overall management of the Health Physics Office related to the Stennis Space Center (SSC) Radiation Protection Program. This position serves as a lead for all health physics matters related to ionizing and nonionizing radiation. How You Will Fulfill Your Mission Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and Laser Safety Officer (LSO) at NASA’s SSC. Develop, implement, and manage SSC’s Radiation Use Authorization (RUA) program and surveillance of Center contractors and their ionizing and non-ionizing sources. Responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the day-to-day operations, including administrative duties required to fulfill program or contractual requirements, record keeping, inventory maintenance, supply requisition, and database management Provides technical direction and performs radiological monitoring, surveys, inspections, and regulatory compliance support services for all uses of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources Directs health physics services in accordance with NASA contractual requirements and federal regulatory requirements. Serves as the SSC Radiation Protection Committee chair. Makes critical decisions and recommendations, significantly changing, interpreting, and developing important policy, and assures comprehensive application of provisions to all activities under purview Ensures compliance with national, state, and local regulations, standards, and guidelines that impact SSC’s ionizing and non-ionizing radiation protection requirements Evaluates program data to determine trends in technical quality and regulatory compliance. Prepares and presents periodic program review reports Provides customers with technical expertise and serves as primary technical liaison or resource within specific areas as assigned or requested, including areas of program development, regulatory impact, or hazard evaluation Responds to inquiries, investigates, and resolves issues regarding technical concerns The duties and responsibilities described in this position description in no way state or imply that these are the only duties performed. You have faith in your own ideas and ability to be successful You hold yourself to the highest standard and work to inspire your team to produce quality work Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements Minimum Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Health or Nuclear Physics, radiation protection Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience in environmental, environmental health, or medical specialty National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certified or equivalent level of training and experience Possess a valid driver’s license Strong knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and experience in reading, analyzing, and developing technical reports, regulations, and effectively communicating verbally and in writing. Health physics experience at universities, academic, medical, State/Federal regulatory environments, nuclear power, or the Department of Defense Demonstrated skills and experience with various health physics disciplines Certified Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, or an equivalent level of training, education, and experience Certified Laser Safety Officer by the Board of Laser Safety, or an equivalent level of training, education, and experience Working Conditions The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the job’s essential functions.
