out of 5 stars Birmingham, AL 35205 Description The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ophthalmology department, is seeking an experienced Researcher Associate to join their team. As a Researcher Associate, you will lead and execute research projects under the PI’s supervision, collaborating with labs and trainees. This position requires expertise in designing studies, analyzing data, developing programs, and assisting in publishing findings. You will work with cross-functional teams, manage timelines, contribute to scientific writing, maintain imaging equipment, and handle research animals and human biospecimens for imaging studies. General Responsibilities As a Researcher, you will play a key role in driving scientific discovery by independently leading and executing research projects. This professional-level position demands a high degree of expertise and judgement in designing studies, analyzing data, and may involve assistants in publishing findings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, manage project timelines, and contribute to grant writing and securing funding for future research. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens. General tasks include carrying out functional/structural vision tests on animals (mice and rats) to assess the degeneration of the visual pathways. Further tasks include subsequent molecular and histological analysis of the retina, optic nerve and CNS tissue. Key Duties & Responsibilities To conduct cellular, molecular, and histological studies and general animal experimentation in a vision research laboratory. To set up and operate laboratory equipment and to record and consolidate research data. Perform experiments on mice or rats, including surgical induction of optic nerve degeneration and induction of autoimmune reactions. (e.g. EAE). Perform minimally invasive structural and functional visual systems readouts in animals. Perform histochemical and immunohistochemical evaluation, molecular, and protein biochemical analysis of neuronal tissue. Maintain daily records on data and procedures carried out. Prepare materials for reports, manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications. Assist in maintaining inventory of chemicals and reagents, keeping the premises neat and orderly. Instruct trainees in laboratory procedures and techniques. Duties will require occasional availability after hours or on weekends. To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization. To plan, coordinate and conduct research. Performs other duties as assigned.
Hourly Salary Range :
$24.05 -$31.25 Qualifications Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field OR Bachelor’s degree in related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Associate’s degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required or High School diploma or GED and six (6) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Preferences Hands-on skills in induction of retinal ganglion cell and/or optic nerve degeneration, surgical manipulations in the visual system, and induction of autoimmune reactions (e.g., EAE) in rodent animals. Prior experience with retinal imaging (e.g., optical coherence tomography), visual electrophysiology (e.g., pattern
ERG, VEP
recordings), and assessment of visual acuity in rodents. Experience with molecular biology techniques (incl. DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, Western Blot, etc.). Experience with histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Key Skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills (level of a native speaker). Excellent interpersonal skills.
