RESEARCHER ASSOCIATE
University of Alabama, Birmingham Birmingham, AL 35205 Description The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care department, is seeking an experienced Researcher Associate to join their team. As a Researcher Associate, you will lead and execute research projects under the PI’s supervision, collaborating with labs and trainees. This position requires expertise in designing studies, analyzing data, developing programs, and assisting in publishing findings. You will work with cross-functional teams, manage timelines, contribute to scientific writing, maintain imaging equipment, and handle research animals and human biospecimens for imaging studies. General Responsibilities As a Researcher Associate, this intermediate-level position will require you to independently conduct more complex studies and analyses, contributing to the advancement of research projects. With greater autonomy, you will design experiments, interpret data, and collaborate with senior researchers to develop and refine research protocols. Your role may also include mentoring junior staff and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens. Key Duties & Responsibilities Analyze optical coherence tomography (uOCT) images using statistical techniques, Image J, and MATLAB. Perform comprehensive airway analysis using LabVIEW software, Image J, and Slicer 3D, including the development and implementation of automated methods. Conduct detailed studies on mucociliary clearance (MCC) and track mucus blobs to advance our understanding of respiratory disease mechanisms. Execute preprocessing and segmentation tasks for lung and airway structures from CT images. Develop and maintain Matlab, Python and R scripts to automate complex and time-consuming tasks within ongoing research projects. Apply deep learning methods to enhance image processing tasks, ensuring cutting-edge solutions in medical imaging analytics. Support conduct of medical imaging of cells, tissues, and animal models. Work collaboratively with partnering labs, rotating students, and external research teams that maintain imaging equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.
Hourly Salary Range :
$19.80 -$32.15 Qualifications Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field OR Associate’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Preferences Excellent record keeping, strong work ethic, desire for career growth, and a collaborative spirit are essential. Experience with lung imaging and writing analysis algorithms.
