Chair, Math/Science Specialty Department Position Summary:

The selected candidate will be responsible to teach all research course for the Math/Science Department. In addition, duties include guiding & mentoring students through their research projects in preparation for various research competitions.

Performance Responsibilities:

Maintains an active research laboratory-typed environment and guides students through meaningful and timely research projects. Development of one or more research questions and active research activities aimed at answering these research activities. Guides and mentors students through the full research cycle project with the end result of publication in the newly created annual ASFA Math/Science Research Journal. Teach students the technical and statistical skills necessary to carry out significant work in a laboratory. Creates and maintains working relationships with existing STEM communities and research universities seeking to obtain access to research mentorships. Communicates with research mentors and to check on student progress and works to develop new research opportunities for students. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere. Identifies appropriate student candidates for research projects. Exhibits positive human relation skills. Evaluates the educational program and student progress. Maintains and submits records and reports. Maintains flexibility in and openness to courses that reflect the department’s needs. Coaches and chaperones students in various science and engineering fairs and research competitions. Integrates instructional technologies into the classroom. Supports the mission and goals of the school. Works with all other instructors to facilitate flexible test dates and class attendance to benefit students.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a Master’s degree in STEM or related field. 5 years experience in an educational/academic setting with at least 1 year engaged in research. Strong knowledge of laboratory safety. High proficiency in written and oral communication. Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals and diverse populations. Demonstrated ability to work with young people on complex, open-ended subjects. Ability to teach statistical concepts and skills as needed in the data analysis of research projects. Ability to work independently, resolve issues, seek help when needed, and work on concurrent projects. Ability to travel, especially weekends, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. or Ed.

D. Demonstrated record of scholarship and research with some scholarly publication record in an area of research that can realistically be carried at ASFA. Demonstrated peer-reviewed research results.
