THPO Compliance & Research Assistant The Mohegan Tribe of Indians Of Connecticut 1 Church Lane, Montville, CT 06382
Summary of Job Description:
The incumbent is responsible for helping the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) fulfill essential duties relating to the THPO grant including the Mohegan Tribal Historic Preservation Plan, Section 106 compliance, grant reporting, and departmental projects. The position also supports with the researching and processing of Tribal responsibilities relating to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA), National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA) and the Mohegan Cultural Resources Protection Ordinance.
Minimum Requirements:
Knowledge and understanding of Mohegan or Northeastern Indigenous history, artifacts, and culture Knowledge of precolonial, colonial history, and ethnography Passion for and commitment to Native American history. Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Word & Excel Strong organizational skills Expository writing skills Demonstrated ability to take direction and work collaboratively
Education, Experience and Training:
Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Native American Studies, Native American and or Environmental Law, Museum Studies, or related field OR High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of professional experience working in the fields of Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, American Indian Law, or a related field AND Experience using database software programs Demonstrated experience in writing, editing, and proofreading documents to accurately compose and produce correct collections of documentation, accession documents, and research reports
Additional Requirements:
Successful candidate must pass the background check in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (ICPA) Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule, including Saturdays Ability to travel locally, regionally, or nationally, as needed Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from state of residence The Mohegan Tribal Government is committed to Native American Preference and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
