Job Details:

Mercer University seeks a professional academic advisor to join the Office of Academic & Advising Services team, to provide regular and timely advice and assistance to undergraduates applying to graduate and professional schools.

Responsibilities:

Provide pre-graduate and professional school advising and support to undergraduate students enrolled in one of the traditional undergraduate colleges and schools on the Mercer-Macon campus and interested in pursuing graduate study or a career in healthcare.

Responsibilities include:

Provide academic assistance for any undergraduate students enrolled in one of the traditional undergraduate colleges and schools on the Mercer-Macon campus who drop in for advising; Provide advising for undergraduate students enrolled in one of the traditional undergraduate colleges and schools on the Mercer-Macon campus who applied for graduate or professional school but were not accepted; Create workshops and other programming designed to assist students in determining if graduate or professional school is the right path for them, researching programs, preparing applications, and finding funding sources for graduate or professional programs, collaborating with the other University offices as necessary; Teach a one-credit hour First-Year Student Experience (UNV 101) course each fall and possibly in spring; Develop and maintain a website and related social media to inform students about postgraduate opportunities; Assist in data management and generate summary reports on applications, acceptance rates, and assessment data of the students who have taken advantage of academic advisement, events, and services; Advise and coordinate activities of student pre-graduate and professional school organizations as necessary, including the Mercer Pre-Law Society; Engage in professional development opportunities though national organizations, and establish and maintain professional relationships with graduate advisors in other institutions; Represent Pre-Graduate and Professional School Programs at Saturday Previews and during orientation events as needed; Serve as a resource for faculty and other professional advisors across the University; Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in student affairs, higher education, or related field, or in a biological or physical science, by date of appointment and one year experience of advising or student affairs experience in a university or college setting (may include experience gained during a graduate degree program) are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in teaching and/or classroom management with young adult students; Understanding of the purpose and advantages of a liberal arts education; Familiarity with social media platforms for outreach and student engagement; and Experience with SIS and CMS tools.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience working with various student populations; Excellent communication skills in both public speaking and writing; Excellent organizational and collaborative skills, with a team-oriented work ethic; Competence in data processing and analysis software; Ability to work flexible hours and occasional weekends.
