The Cohen Lab in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University invites applications for a Student Assistant. The individual(s) will work with a research team investigating the effects of thin layer placement of sediment on salt marshes near Jekyll Island, Georgia. Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period. Employment is contingent upon funding. Responsibilities
Identify, quantify, and analyze tidal marsh vegetation and invertebrates in the field
Collect, process, and analyze sediment cores for infauna and physicochemical data
Microphytobenthos sample collection, processing, and analysis
Water sample collection and analysis
Data entry and analysis tasks Shift Specifics Up to 20 hours per week for 8 weeks
Flexible with schedule of availability
Total compensation not to exceed $5120
Required Qualifications Educational Requirements Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred Education Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) completed prior to start date from an accredited institution Preferred Experience Strong communication skills, both written and oral
Ability to conduct fieldwork
C-class operator certification to drive a University vehicle
Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team
Successful completion of background investigation before employment
Ability to identify and quantify marsh vegetation and invertebrates, collect water samples, and make water physicochemical measurements
Ability to process sediment cores for infauna and soil variables (organic content, grain size, salinity)
Ability to process field-collected samples using complex laboratory instrumentation (microscopy, spectrophotometer, turbidity meter, fluorometer)
Proficiency in Microsoft Applications and statistics software
Proposed Salary $32.00 per hour This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis. Required Documents to Attach
