Position Summary The Department of Neurosurgery within the School of Medicine and Stanley S. Scott Cancer Research Center of Excellence at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans invites applications for an academic faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; rank and track to be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Incumbent will serve as the Vice Chair of Neurological Research for the Department of Neurosurgery and the Associate Director for Basic/Translational Science for the Cancer Center. Interested candidates should have an active and significant extramurally funded program and a vision for collaborative research projects related to neurological and cancer research as well as teaching ability. Health Cancer Center working collaboratively with faculty, residents, and students to support and advance the strategic goals of the University, School and Center. We are seeking applications from distinguished academicians with proven scientific, strategic and collaborative leadership skills. The successful candidate should be committed to the development of leading research with a focus on extramural grant funding and academic excellence in support of the research and educational missions of the institution, and a commitment to excellence in academics including mentoring residents and medical students. This senior leadership role is responsible for facilitating ongoing and potential research opportunities in neuro-oncological sciences, neurological malignancies, mentoring residents and faculty, and driving advancements in the field. The incumbent will work closely with faculty members and residents to support research development, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and ensure research projects align with the department’s goals. Qualified applicants should have a record of scholarship commensurate with appointment as Associate Professor or Professor; international reputation and track record of success in some aspect of cellular and molecular medicine; a demonstrated commitment to excellence in academics including medical, graduate and post-graduate education and the mentoring of trainees and faculty; and the ability to be a leader for both the Department of Neurosurgery and the Cancer Center, promoting the development of innovative research programs that align with the research mission of the School of Medicine and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans.

Research Oversight:

Supervise and provide guidance on the design, implementation, and execution of research projects within the Department of Neurosurgery and

Health Cancer Center.
Advise faculty, residents, and medical students on emerging neurological research trends, methodologies, and funding opportunities.
Promote innovation and cutting-edge research in cancer and neurological diseases, treatments, and technologies.
Review and evaluate ongoing research projects to ensure they meet departmental and institutional standards for quality, ethical compliance, and scientific integrity.

Mentorship and Collaboration:

Act as a mentor to faculty, residents, and medical students in developing their research initiatives.
Meet regularly with faculty, residents and medical students to discuss individual progress, provide feedback, and offer strategic advice on potential research paths.
Foster a collaborative research environment that encourages teamwork across disciplines within the department and with external partners.

Research Strategy and Development:

Develop and implement strategies to enhance the department’s research portfolio, focusing on both basic science and clinical research.
Identify potential research collaborations within the institution, with other universities, industry partners, and funding agencies.
Assist in preparing and submitting grant proposals for neurological and cancer research funding. Monitor and support the academic publishing efforts of faculty, residents and students.

Academic and Administrative Leadership:

Participate in departmental leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning regarding research priorities and initiatives.
Work with the Department Head to establish and manage departmental budgets for research activities and ensure proper allocation of resources.
Supervise research personnel including coordinator(s) and clinical trial nurse(s) within the Neurosurgery Department.

Progress Reporting and Communication:

Regularly meet with faculty, residents and students to monitor research progress, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure project timelines are met.
Present research progress, outcomes, and future directions at departmental meetings, academic conferences, and institutional events.
Maintain communication with key stakeholders including department leadership, university administration, and research collaborators. Associate Director for Basic/Translational Science Role in the

Health Cancer Center leadership team, serving as the Associate Cancer Center Director for Basic/Translational Science. In this capacity, the incumbent will report directly to the

LSU-LCMC

Health Cancer Center Director, and will: actively participate in the strategic planning towards a Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) application, including writing appropriate sections of the CCSG application; present to Cancer Center External Advisory Committee and Internal Advisory Committee; oversee the laboratory-based Research Programs in the Cancer Center; meet regularly with Program Directors to assess their progress towards CCSG goals including funding, recruitment, research productivity, intra- and inter-program interactions; participate in Cancer Center Executive Committee meetings and regular meetings with the Cancer Center Director; provide input on strategic directions, recruitment decisions, collaborative research projects, multi-component collaborative grant proposals, and translational research opportunities; lead a nationally successful, extramurally funded cancer research program that significantly contributes to the quest for NCI designation.
