Full Job Description Research Associate:

Heartworm Alternative Treatment Study Our research group is seeking a Research Associate to run an important study of alternative heartworm treatments in a community setting. You will work with experienced researchers and colleagues who are passionate about advancing shelter and community medicine. You will be responsible for enrolment, virtual follow-ups, follow-up heartworm tests, data recording and coordination of all on-site aspects of the study. You will be assisted by and liaise with co-investigators in New Orleans, Florida, and Toronto, Canada. This is a full-time contract position in New Orleans, Louisiana, for 31 months, from 1 July 2025 to 31 January 2028. Job Duties Assist with finalization and modifications of the research protocol and study forms Ensure procedures remain complaint with Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine, UF IACUC, and client informed consent requirements Maintain contemporaneous paper and electronic databases Maintain study supply inventory Supervise and perform blood draws; point-of-care heartworm tests; process samples and submit to reference laboratory; store archived samples Dispense medication and coordinate client incentives Follow-up with clients, arrange, perform and coordinate follow-up blood sampling. Travel to different study sites and client homes as needed Assist in overcoming client barriers to study compliance. Make special arrangements for study compliance for dogs that leave the area or change ownership, if needed Maintain prompt communication with clients Maintain regular communication with study team Prepare client social media posts and newsletters to maintain engagement Coordinate team meetings, create agendas, and record minutes If needed and time allows, assist with other tasks at

TIP Education Required:

Registered veterinary technician (RVT, LVT or CVT), or equivalent skills and experience Experience Prior experience with animal shelters and/or access-to-care veterinary clinical services is highly recommended Prior experience with programs providing human social services and/or animal social services is recommended Prior experience with research projects is recommended Skills Communication and persistence: People skills, persistence and diplomacy – required to follow up with clients and ensure they attend appointments over 18 months of enrollment. Client follow-up is key to the success of this project Comfortable communicating through email, text, voice and in-person channels Ability to develop trust and professional relationships with clients Dog handling: Low-stress handling skills,able to handle rambunctious and large dogs Skilled at venipuncture Data and technology: Google Sheets, Excel – intermediate to expert Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook Quality control and project management experience recommended

The Research Associate will report to the Principal Investigator in Toronto, but also to a veterinary supervisor in New Orleans, and day-by-day will work with and be accountable to TIP management. Must have own transport, ability to transport supplies, and a valid driver’s licence Must be able to attend clinics and appointments at TIP locations in New Orleans as well as arrange and conduct house calls with an assistant. May be required to enrol dogs and take samples at other locations in New Orleans and possibly Baton Rouge Remote work up to 25% by arrangement and written approval of supervisors for tasks not requiring on-site presence. Hours may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
