The Position:

Depending on the assignment, they may: a) conduct petrographic examinations in support of investigations involving the evaluation, testing, and repair of deteriorated and distressed concrete and masonry structures; b) prepare samples for laboratory testing; c) perform air-void content and chloride analyses; or d) assist with field work, including non-destructive testing in the field. This person will also work with other petrographers, laboratory staff, and engineering staff to develop practical solutions to our clients’ problems. We have long recognized that integrating in-house petrographic examination of concrete and other construction materials with our other work provides us the best outcomes and value to our clients.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Perform routine petrographic examinations under the supervision of a Senior Technical Manager/Senior Petrographer, including condition appraisal, evaluation, and laboratory testing of construction materials (concrete, mortar, aggregates, masonry, terra cotta, grout, ceramic tile, terrazzo, cementitious underlayments, etc.) using optical microscopy. Support concrete and aggregate evaluations, including point counts, air void analyses, sieve analysis, material testing, and other construction materials evaluations. Drafting of reports for review by others. Support of field evaluations of structures, quarries, and other structures, as required. Assist with preparation of samples, as required. Management of samples.

What You’ll Need:

Bachelor’s (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Geology from an accredited institution. Proficiency with optical petrographic techniques, including transmitted and reflected light microscopy. Ability to license as a professional geologist preferred. Knowledge of construction materials, their production, their underlying composition, and associated deterioration mechanisms. Understanding of supplemental testing and analytical techniques such as XRD, IR, SEM-EDS, and chemical testing preferred; ability to learn to operate SEM-EDS instrumentation. Curiosity and ability to learn. Excellent communication and writing skills, and ability to relate and work well with clients and peers at all levels. Commitment to high standards, honesty, and ethical conduct.
