Position Description The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer. Description of Duties
This Graduate Assistant (GA) position represents an invaluable opportunity for a motivated individual to immerse themselves in the dynamic realm of biodiversity, ecological, and conservation sciences. As a crucial member of our research laboratory, the GA will play a multifaceted role, contributing significantly to both academic and research pursuits and professional development. The primary responsibilities of the GA encompass a wide spectrum of essential tasks vital for the smooth functioning of our research endeavors. These duties include but are not limited to:
Maintenance and Preparation:
Responsible for the meticulous preparation and upkeep of field equipment necessary for conducting faunal and floral surveys, ensuring that all instruments are in optimal condition for data collection.
Field Surveys:
Conducting rigorous and standardized field surveys within wetland and aquatic habitats, employing established methodologies to gather invaluable data crucial for ecological research and conservation efforts. Specifically, the GA will conduct field surveys using both active and passive sampling techniques to document biodiversity across wetlands that vary in their restoration status.
Data Management:
Proficiently managing and organizing data derived from fieldwork and online databases, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for subsequent analysis.
Geospatial Analysis:
Undertaking the processing of geospatial data and remote-sensing imagery, utilizing advanced analytical tools to derive meaningful insights into spatial patterns and ecological dynamics to explain biodiversity variation across space and time.
Statistical Analysis:
Conducting robust statistical analyses on acquired data, employing cutting-edge statistical techniques to elucidate patterns and relationships critical for understanding ecological phenomena.
Scientific Writing and Communication:
Developing proficiency in scientific writing and communication targeted towards indexed peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. This includes synthesizing research findings into coherent manuscripts suitable for publication, adhering to the standards and guidelines of scientific journals. Additionally, the GA will gain experience in effectively communicating research findings through conference presentations, honing their abilities to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Training and Mentoring:

Previous experience in research for at least a year, including field surveys in wetland environments
Completion of coursework on GIS or remote sensing.
