out of 5 stars Durham, NH USNH Employees should apply within Workday through the Jobs Hub app A research scientist is sought to continue an ongoing project to characterize the variability in wood anatomical responses to tapping across five species of maple trees, including data analysis and communication of results. This is a grant-funded position with a 12-month term, and is contingent on the continued availability of funding from
USDA AMS.
Duties/Responsibilities:
(30%) Analyze data related to the formation of nonconductive wood around maple taps. (40%) Publish and present results at conferences and meetings of producers, farmers, and foresters throughout the northeast and upper Midwest. (10%) Harvest study trees and prepare wood samples for analysis. (5%) Lab analyses of nonstructural carbohydrates in wood samples. (15%) Collaborate with Cooperative Extension staff to generate tapping guidelines and communication documents.
Required Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field. Experience in tapping maple trees and producing maple syrup.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience operating a chainsaw. Experience in tapping maple trees and producing maple syrup. Experience supervising field and laboratory assistants. Experience with data analysis and basic statistics. Strong communication skills.
