Research Assistant

  • Physical Trainer Research Assistant
  • Physical Trainer We’re looking for an experienced part-time exercise professional who is enthusiastic about coaching and physical training.

At the Neuromuscular Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, you would be a trainer for our Adaptations and Resiliency in Multi-Stressor Operations (ARMOR) research study. Pay range for qualified candidates $15.50-18.00/h.

The ARMOR Study:

Each iteration of the ARMOR study consists of two-weeks of testing (pre/post) and 4 weeks of training. Participants train 5 days per week, 3 days of double sessions and two days of single sessions. The first session on the double days begins at 0530 and ends at 0800. The second session begins at 1730 and ends at 2000. The goal of the ARMOR study is to investigate musculoskeletal outcomes during military-relevant physical training, HPG inhibition, and hormonal intervention.

Requirements :
  • 20 hours per week, must be available to work from 0500-0830 and/or 1700-2030
  • Experience in exercise science, strength and conditioning, coaching, and/or personal training
  • Physically active and able to spend 3 hours on feet, spot participants in major lifts (squat, pull up, bench press, etc.), and lift 20-50 pounds.
  • BS or MS in exercise science, kinesiology, exercise physiology, or relevant field
  • Experience in exercise testing such as Maximum Ventilatory Threshold, Countermovement Jumps, and Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (preferred)
  • Certification from a recognized accrediting association (NSCA, CSCCa) (preferred)
Responsibilities :
  • Assisting in leading 3-hour training programs, 5x per week.
  • Cueing, demonstrating, and spotting resistance training exercises for up to 10 participants.
  • Monitoring participants on 30-60-minute trail rucks.
  • Collecting, cleaning, and uploading training data such as Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE), load volume, and ruck pace.
  • Collecting, cleaning, and uploading wearable data from Garmin smartwatches and Inertial Measurement Units.
  • Handling biospecimens such as saliva and urine.
  • Setting up and breaking down stations around the gym with dumbbells, yoga mats, weighted vests, and boxes.
  • Experience in exercise science, strength and conditioning, coaching, and/or personal training
  • Physically active and able to spend 3 hours on feet, spot participants in major lifts (squat, pull up, bench press, etc.), and lift 20-50 pounds.
